General Information
- The Center for Doctoral Studies in Economics & Management (CDSEM) of the University of Mannheim provides PhD programs in economics and finance.
- The teaching language is English.
- In the PhD program in economics there are compulsory courses in Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, and Econometrics and a number of elective courses in different fields.
- In the PhD program in finance there are compulsory courses in Microeconomics, Econometrics, Capital Markets, Continuous Finance and a number of elective courses in different fields.
- Scholarships are available for each of the two programs. There is no tuition fee.
- Director of the program is Professor Ernst-Ludwig von Thadden.
Sixteen full-time senior faculty members and numerous junior faculty members are engaged
in a variety of research projects at the frontiers of their fields, ranging from micro- and
macroeconomics, econometrics, statistical methods, labor economics, industrial organization,
financial economics, general equilibrium and game theory, policy analysis
to economic history and international trade.
The Department has special expertise in microeconomic
specializations and econometrics, both in theory and application. Its outstanding
research program is aided by large institutional grants from the German National
Science Foundation (DFG) and from European Union research and training grants; additional funds are obtained from other public and private
institutions.
With their frequent
publications in leading national and international journals, junior faculty members contribute
to the outstanding scientific reputation of the Department of Economics. In the past
years, junior faculty members were able to access leading academic positions in
Germany as well as abroad.
The Department of Economics has established an exceptionally large number of international contacts, and maintains numerous institutional contacts to universities and research institutions throughout the world.
The Department of Business Administration
The majority of students at the University of Mannheim is enrolled in the Department of Business Administration, the Universitys largest department with 21 fully ordained professors, more than 100 additional faculty members, and over 4000 students. This reflects the historical profile of the University as well as the departments high national and international reputation.
Research and teaching at the department focuses on a unique variety of specializations, comprising, i. a., Finance and Banking, Accounting and Controlling, Marketing, Industrial Management, International Management, Public Sector Management, Organization and Human Resources, Operations Research, Logistics und Transportation Management, Insurance Management, and Business Informatics.
A consequent combination of renowned research, high quality teaching, and interdisciplinary as well as international cooperation has evolved as the key factor for the success of the Mannheim Management Concept. The Department of Business Administration has been the first German Business School to be accredized with AACSB International and Equis.
Research Centers
Various research centers are associated with the Departments:
- The Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW) is one of the leading institutes
in the field of user-related empirical economic research in Europe. The ZEW works in the
field of user-related empirical economic research. In this context it particularly distinguished
itself nationally and internationally by analyzing internationally comparative issues
in the European context and by compiling scientifically important data bases.
- The Mannheim Research Institute for the Economics of Aging (MEA) was founded
to help evaluate, anticipate, and accompany the micro- and macroeconomic aspects of
demographic change. The aim of MEA is to develop and administer empirical models that
predict these developments. These models base on German, European, and global data.
The work of MEA is addressed
towards decision-makers in politics and business and shall provide information of public
interest. MEA combines scientific research with scientific consulting. It is a member of
various interdisciplinary and international research networks in order to contribute to the
transfer of knowledge. Due to its international and in particular its European orientation,
MEA has the resources to analyze demographic changes, their economic implications and
their interactions with policy measures in comparative country studies.
- The Centre for Survey Research and Methodology (ZUMA) in Mannheim offers consultation
services on the setting up, conducting, and analyzing of social science studies for
those working in social research. The center conducts its own research, facilitates access
to official data, and monitors social developments in specific areas using a system of social
indicators. In addition, ZUMA carries out research with the aim of improving the methodological
and technical basis of social science research.
- The Sonderforschungsbereich (SFB) 504 at the University of Mannheim is an internationally
oriented National Research Center, supported by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft
(DFG), the German National Science Foundation. Established in
1997, the SFB forms a research network that links the Departments of Business Administration,
Economics, and Social Sciences. Title and research program of the Sonderforschungsbereich
is Rationality Concepts, Decision Making and Economic Modeling. Research focuses on a broad spectrum of theoretical, empirical
and experimental analyses of decision processes and their implications on financial,
goods and labor markets. The SFB has its own PC laboratory to run experiments.
- The Sonderforschungsbereich/Transregio 15 Governance and the Efficiency of Economic Systems was founded in 2004 and is supported from the National Science Foundation (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft DFG). In the SFB/TR 15 is a network of researchers of 5 leading universities in Germany established. Research topic of the SFB/TR 15: In the last decade of the 20th century is determined through two phenomens: the revolution in information and communication technology and the internationalisation of markets, known as globalization. theoreticans and empiricans are researching in this fields, which are not only in the focus of the scientific community but also in politics and economy the interest of the research results is very high.
Infrastructure
The CDSEM is located in offices provided by the university. The IT-system is connected to
MannhAttaN (Mannheim Attached Networks), thus you have the standard possibilities to
communicate electronically, and you have access to the resources of many networks.
Additionally the departments have installed generously equipped PC labs.
The library of the university has over 1.5 million books and approximately 5000 journal at
one’s disposal. In the field of economics and business administration the library is one of
the best-equipped in Germany.
The Economics Library holds a collection of more than 85,000 volumes in German as well
as other languages (mostly English) and subscribes to 280 journals. In addition, there are
two smaller libraries for Economic and Social History (14,000 volumes) and Statistics
(11,000 volumes).
Since October 2001 the economics department is located at a recently constructed building
next to the castle in L 7, 3-5. Together with the contiguous department of business
administration it has established a center of outstanding expertise.
