Preparatory courses: International Summer/ Winter Academy
For exchange students, the University of Mannheim offers a preparatory intensive language course, the International Summer/ Winter Academy. However, the International Summer/Winter Academy classes are more than just language courses: apart from the morning intensive course, they also give you the opportunity to attend a number of seminars. In these seminars, you can learn about the culture and mindset in Germany or attend language practice courses to deepen your knowledge of the German language.
The University of Mannheim opens its facilities to the attendees of the International Summer/Winter Academy: You can study individually in the “Mediathek” or work out in the “Uni-Sport” sport courses.
In addition, you will be assisted by tutors who will help to make your experience in Mannheim as enjoyable as possible. Small excursions, a pub tour, and sport activities are included in the program.

Accommodation during the International Summer/Winter Academy
Accommodation is not included in the Academy fee. Therefore we strongly advise to arrange accommodation for the duration of the Academy as soon as possible. The International Office provides a very limited number of dorm rooms to exchange students from our overseas partner universities. In case you booked a room in a student residence and it is available, you can move in and keep this room for the semester. Please take note of the length of lease term because the rooms differ in the time they can be reserved - especially the beginning (The link will be sent to all nominated exchange students in May/ November).
You will find detailed information regarding arrival and enrolment in our online portal myUniMA.
German language and culture courses during the semester
The International Office offers special courses for exchange students throughout the semester including language and culture courses. The culture courses are offered in English. The classes are provided at different language ability levels (A1-C1) in accordance with the General European Framework (GER) and are available for all exchange students. The registration fee is 15€ per course (no refund, regardless of whether you attend the course or not). Please be advised that the courses will be cancelled in case there are not enough students wanting to take the course.
Registration is only possible via MyUniMA (registration in January and at the end of August, respectively). Every student can register for a maximum of three courses. Only students who attend the first lesson, can take part in the course. Please note that the number of participants per course is limited to 15 students. Therefore, we ask you to choose your courses carefully. If you decide to not participate in a course, then you must deregister from the course!
You can find all the important information about the registration process on MyUniMA. If you do not have access to the internet, you can use the computers at the Express-Service (L1, 1) during the office hours (no university login needed).
ECTS for German courses
For successfully taking part in the German courses, you will be awarded the designated number of ECTS credits, whereby the number of credits depends on the expected workload. Credits will only be awarded if you pass the course successfully and participated regularly. Please clarify in advance with your home university whether credits for language courses will be accepted.
