Studying at the University of Mannheim

  • What’s special about the program?

The Mannheim bachelor’s program in Sociology focuses on a first-class education in statistics. The knowledge you’ll acquire will be more profound than at other universities. In terms of content, you will have a wide range of topics to specialize in. As there are several social research institutes in Mannheim, the program closely links research and teaching. That way you benefit from the practical relevance of the program and you get plenty of opportunities to apply your knowledge as a research assistant or intern.

If you plan to spend a semester abroad you get to choose from a list of partner universities from around the world.

Apart from the subject-specific advantages, you also benefit from the great support the dean's office provides. The contact persons are there to help you with any matters concerning your program, a semester abroad, and internship opportunities. Those are the reasons why the social sciences in Mannheim lead the CHE University Ranking

  • Extracurricular activities

Apart from studying, there is much to experience as a student in Mannheim: a wide range of sports, culture and music, and the weekly open-air Schneckenhof parties during the summer. You would like to do voluntary work? The University of Mannheim has much to offer: there are more than 50 student organizations, political student groups, and the departmental student committee. You will surely find a group that’s for you.

After graduation

  • Academia

The bachelor’s program prepares you for the master’s program and for a future career in academia. Many graduates of the bachelor’s program continue with the master’s program in Sociology. But there are many more things you can do with a bachelor's degree in Sociology.

The master’s program in Sociology prepares students for a doctorate and an academic career. That’s why most of the graduates of the master's program go into research.

  • Career opportunities

Graduates of Sociology can also start a career in other fields of work, for example in the public service sector, in international organizations and associations, or in human resource management. The internship office and the internship database support you in the search for internships and entry positions on the job market.

What you need to know

  • Application and admission

There is no numerus clausus for Sociology, so I can only recommend anyone interested in the bachelor's program to just give it a try. It’s worth it! If you have any questions, you can always contact the faculty or other students.

The master’s program in Sociology at the University of Mannheim is selective. You can read more about the admission requirements and selection criteria on the website of the master’s program and in the selection statutes.

  • Small classes

There are relatively few students in the bachelor’s and master’s programs in Sociology. Students can therefore be supervised individually and are in close contact with their teachers and professors.

It is also easier for students to get to know their peers, especially when small groups of students gather to do group work during exercise courses.
