Online Exchange Initiative (OEI) – ENGAGE.EU
Together with its partners in the ENGAGE.EU alliance (LUISS University, NHH Norwegian School of Economics, Tilburg University, Université Toulouse 1 Capitole, University of National and World Economy, WU Vienna), University of Mannheim launched an online exchange initiative. Students from above mentioned partner universities can apply for a range of online courses offered by University of Mannheim. As a participant, you will be part of a virtual and international classroom. Benefit from international learning opportunities and exchange ideas with students from different countries!
Application Process
Requirements – Who can apply?
The online course offer is available to students studying at the following partner universities:
- LUISS University
- NHH Norwegian School of Economics
- Tilburg University
- Université Toulouse 1 Capitole
- University of National and World Economy
- WU Vienna
Bachelor’s level courses: enrollment in a bachelor’s program at a partner university during spring semester 2022; minimum of one year of full time studies completed which amounts to 60 ECTS Credits.
Master’s level courses: enrollment in a master’s program at a partner university during spring semester 2022.
Please note: in addition to the above mentioned general admission requirements, single courses may also have special admission requirements such as previous knowledge in the field etc. Please take a close look at the course descriptions and stated requirements in the course catalog below.
Application period – Until when can I apply and when will I get enrolled?
The application period will close on 15 December 2021. All applicants will be informed about the outcome of their application by 22 December 2021 at the latest. Admitted students will then be asked to submit the Application for Enrollment until 14 January 2022 (incl. transferral of Administrative Fee). Subsequently, admitted students who have submitted their Application for Enrolment and the Administrative Fee on time will be enrolled during the week 31 January – 04 February 2022.
Please note: During the week 07 – 11 February („Welcome Week“), our departments and schools will host Orientation Sessions for incoming exchange students. OEI students are welcome to attend to learn more about the administrative processes regarding course registration, allocation to exercise groups (if applicable), exam registration and so forth. OEI students will be invited to these Orientation Events after enrollment.
Application – How can I apply and what do I need to submit?
Please send your application via e-mail to oei.engageuni-mannheim.de and include the following information/
documents: - Application Form (signed and scanned) – List of up to five courses you would be interested in (in order of preference) and the maximum number of courses you wish to attend. You can be enrolled in a maximum of 3 courses.
- Confirmation of enrollment at your home university
- Transcript of records
The selection will be based on an evaluation of your overall academic performance (transcript of records) and the statement of motivation. University of Mannheim will inform its partner universities about the admitted students, so they can confirm the students' selection and enrollment.
Please note: Enrollment at the home institution during the spring semester 2022 is mandatory for enrollment as an OEI student at University of Mannheim in spring semester 2022. Should students lose their enrollment status at the home institution after having been admitted and enrolled for OEI at University of Mannheim, disenrollment at University of Mannheim will also be enforced.
I am not sure if I get a credit transfer approval from my home university before the application period ends – what should I do?
We encourage you to apply even if you do not have final credit transfer approval from your home university at the time of application. Should you find out that credit transfer is not possible at your home university and would not like to attend an ENGAGE course at University of Mannheim any more, kindly write an e-mail to oei.engageuni-mannheim.de and state that you would like to cancel your particpation. In case you already have transferred the administrative fee, reimbursement may be possible in case you request disenrollment until 31 January 2022 the latest.
I got admitted at University of Mannheim – but now I realize that I cannot participate in the course anymore, what should I do?
Please write an e-mail to oei.engageuni-mannheim.de and indicate which course you would like to de-register from. In case you de-register from all courses you were admitted for, please send a written request for disenrollment to the above mentioned e-mail address. In case you already have transferred the administrative fee, reimbursement may be possible in case you request disenrollment until 31 January 2022 the latest.
Administrative Fee
The administrative fee of €110,30 (mandatory students’ union dues) must be paid for enrollment and attendance of courses at University of Mannheim. Apart from this amount, no other fees will be charged. Tuition fees for participating students of this initiative are waived. Please note that you have to bear the costs for reading materials and literature if a course requires the like.

Description:
Several leaks, including the “Panama Papers”, and public outrage about excessive profit shifting of taxable profits by global corporations have turned taxation into a reputational issue for businesses. Also, on the political agenda, tax transparency has been gaining importance and regulations in that field have increased substantially world-wide.
This course, offered jointly with a well-known tax advisory firm, gives an overview of current topics in the field of tax transparency. Students will elaborate on the guiding principles and implementation of a supra-national initiative, e.g. the European Council Directive “DAC6” mandating the reporting of aggressive tax planning arrangements, the Country-by-Country Reporting or the automatic exchange of tax information.
The participants will form groups of three to five students and analyze the implementation of a supra-national initiative in a specific country. The results will be presented in class. In a subsequent group discussion, the fundamental deviations in the local implementations are compared and elaborated in the light of the circumstances of the respective countries. In this way, students gain insights into the political dimension of taxation and into the comparably new field of tax transparency while simultaneously enhancing their presentation skills. In addition, students will also receive individual feedback from a mentor.

The sociology of migration is undoubtedly one of the sociological areas that have experienced a noticeable upswing in recent years. In the course “Ethnic inequality: Comparative approach” we cover a broad array of topics in migration sociology. We first carry out the sociological examination of the causes of migration and address the question what immigrant selectivity means for their successful integration into host countries. The second part of the course deals with the consequences of migration for immigrants themselves and for their incorporation in new societies. We particularly explore cultural, structural, social and identificational aspects of immigrants’ integration. In the third part of the course we look into the reactions of the native-born majority population towards newcomers and the general consequences of immigration for the host society. The breadth of the topics covered by the course reflects the heterogeneity of the field, both theoretically, methodologically and empirically. The overarching aim of the lecture is to provide expertise in the field of migration sociology, paying attention not only to the description of main developments but also to the theoretical understanding and critical assessment of the sophisticated empirical evidence.

This lecture gives an overview of selected theoretical concepts and the main research findings in the field of Comparative Government, specifically focusing on the role of political institutions and their impact for political decision-making at all stages in the political process. The course introduces a number of core themes in the comparative study of political institutions, such as electoral institutions and their effects on turnout, voting behaviour and party strategies. In addition, the lecture focuses on the impact of different institutional designs on patterns of party competition, government formation and coalition governance. In a third step, we discuss the effects of political institutions and of personal characteristics of legislators on various aspects of decision-making within parliaments and governments.

It provides an overview of key terms such as race, class, gender, and identity among others and enables students to understand and reflect upon these key terms and their underlying concepts within their historical, societal, and cultural context. To do so, it raises questions on how cultural texts and practices shape our understanding of society, politics, history and culture.

There will be 4 parallel groups (International Cultural Studies: Lecture A-D) for this course. You will need to register for one group only.
Each parallel group consists of two complementary sections: a weekly preparatory lecture (45 minutes) followed by an interactive discussion session (45 minutes).

Have you heard about the state of crisis we seem to be in lately? From the pandemic to political conflicts, financial challenges, social media, and climate change: crises have permeated important realms of our lives today. This course aims to illuminate different notions of “crisis” and analyse its causes and effects on culture, finance, literature, and politics. We will look beyond the buzzword, define the concept of the term, and develop an understanding of approaches by cultural theorists, writers, and experts in their respective fields.
Designed as a joint virtual project with Salem State University, students from Mannheim and Salem, Massachusetts will work together to address crisis and its ramifications on a weekly basis. Furthermore, the course will be expanded by six guest instructors from Literature, Linguistics, Economics, and History to facilitate a thorough analysis of the many different facets of crisis. In our international and interdisciplinary classroom, students are encouraged to take new perspectives on their subject and discuss crisis as a global phenomenon in an intercultural setting.

International trade has always generated a great deal of controversy. By focusing on the determinants, patterns, and effects of international trade, this course demystifies some of the complex issues that surround discussions of globalization. Why do countries trade with each other? Who gains and who loses from international trade? What are the labor market consequences of international trade, and is trade liberalization responsible for rising inequality? Why do countries have trade disputes?
- Our first goal is to introduce the canonical models in international trade. A tentative list of topics includes the gravity equation, neoclassical trade theory, trade and labor markets, economic geography, and the role of firms in international trade.
- The second goal is to present the empirical tools used in international trade. A tentative list of topics includes the US-China trade war, trade and labor market, and the gravity equation. Students will also get familiar with several widely used trade-related datasets and learn how to conduct empirical analysis.
- Our third goal to introduce frontier researches to students. We will draw on some recent academic papers from international trade, which will allow students to have a good understanding of cutting-edge researches and help students outline future research questions.

Climate change represents a major threat that needs to be tackled on the national, regional, and international levels. The reduction of greenhouse gas emissions is one of the main instruments of climate actions that require global efforts and cooperation between countries. This entails the adoption of policy measures, legal acts, and external relations guided by international agreements.
During this course, we will analyze the EU legal framework on the climate change issues and the interrelated energy policy matters. In the following part of the course, we will deal with the environmental protection actions on the international level, with special attention to the United Nations climate regime. Furthermore, the influence of the environmental requirements on international trade will be also explored, with a focus on the World Trade Organization rules.
Next to the results of the final written (online) exam, the results from seminar papers will also contribute to the overall grade for this course.

IHL protects those who are not participating in hostilities, and those who are no longer participating in hostilities. This body of law imposes limits on the methods and means of warfare. IHL forms part of public international law and is largely based on treaties and rules of customary international law.
In this course the development as well as the basic concepts of IHL will be explored.
