Ukraine Emergency Fund

University of Mannheim Foundation collects donations for early-stage researchers affected by the war in Ukraine

The war in Ukraine leaves many researchers with nothing. The Stiftung Universität Mannheim (University of Mannheim Foundation) and the University of Mannheim have set up an emergency fellowship fund for early-stage researchers affected by the war.

The war in Ukraine is an attack on fundamental values such as democracy, rule of law and basic rights which are also the basis for freedom of research. Many Ukrainian researchers have lost their entire living environment, their job and, in the worst case, family and friends. Many are still in the war zone or are fleeing the country. At best, they have already found a provisional home in Germany or another country. But there are also many people in Russia, in particular researchers, who have the courage to stand up against this war, despite all repressions. As a consequence, they have to fight for their freedom and their livelihood. In addition to the various threats, losses and worries of this cruel war, all of these people have in common that they lack perspective.

Therefore, the University of Mannheim Foundation and the University of Mannheim have established an emergency fund for the researchers affected by the war in Ukraine (Ukraine Notfallfonds). Early-stage researchers from Ukraine and Russia, who have fled the country or are at risk and who are in financial need due to the war, are eligible for this emergency funding, which then allows them to continue their academic work, for example their doctoral studies, at the University of Mannheim. The emergency fund is designed to support twelve fellows for a maximum of twelve months. The fellows will receive a one-time partial reimbursement for travel expenses and the minimum financial means to cover rent and living expenses in the Rhine-Neckar Metropolitan Region, plus an allowance for their children. In total, approximately EUR 300,000 are needed for the fund.  Donations can be made via an online form or via bank transfer.

We actively support early-stage researchers, in particular doctoral students, who are fearing for their life. We want to help them to continue their research project at the University of Mannheim. In this situation, we want so show solidarity and empathy with the people in Ukraine, who have to fear for their country and their life. We also want to support those members of Russian society who have the courage to stand up against this war, despite the repressions.

Who is eligible for support from the emergency fund?

Early-stage researchers from Ukraine and Russia, who have fled the country or are at risk and who are in financial need due to the war, are eligible for this emergency funding, which then allows them to continue their academic work, for example their doctoral studies, at the University of Mannheim. Are you an early-stage researcher from Ukraine or Russia and would like to apply? You will find all details on the necessary documents in our call for applications. We look forward to your application and hope to be able to help you.

We need your support for making these important fellowships possible. Even 50 or 100 euros – and certainly 1,000 euros or more – help to actively support early-stage researchers, who are exposed to acute danger due to the war. In total, we need approximately 300,000 euros.
