Career

I completed a bachelor’s in Psychology in Freiburg and went to Mannheim to pursue a master’s degree. In Mannheim I took several seminars on Educational Psychology. Among other things, I was introduced to service-learning, a teaching method that combines the social commitment of pupils with subject-specific learning in class. This experience was invaluable for my career. I also completed internships and worked freelance in market research. In 2005, I earned a Diplom and started working as market researcher at Seissmo Mannheim. Between 2006 and 2008, I earned a doctorate in Educational Psychology from the University of Landau and subsequently filled a post-doc position at the Chair of Educational Psychology at the University of Mannheim. Since 2011, I have been a school counselor at a counseling center.

Tips for starting your career

I would recommend every student to choose many different subjects throughout the program and specialize in educational psychology and continuing education and training. If you would like to work as school counselor, it makes sense to also know clinical psychology to be able to practice relaxation techniques, for example.

Relevance of the studied program

My studies paved the way for my current job. The seminars were very insightful and practice-oriented, and my minor in Business Administration taught me a lot about the connections to the business world.
