Career

After completing my master's degree in Economics, I spent one year at the Center for Doctoral Studies in Economics (CDSE) at the University of Mannheim to pursue a doctorate in the field of quantitative macroeconomics. During this time, I realized that I wanted to gain more practical experience, which is why in April 2015, I completed a research internship at McKinsey’s Risk Management Practice. I enjoyed my internship so much I continued to work there, deciding in the same breath not to pursue my doctoral studies any further. Instead, I stayed with McKinsey, where I have occupied various positions ever since. Now, I work as an Engagement Manager and consult banks and companies in the fields of risk management and compliance.

Tips for starting your career

What I enjoy most about strategy consulting is the diversity of topics the projects cover and working with intriguing colleagues from the most diverse backgrounds. However, I would only recommend strategy consulting to those who really enjoy it and not only choose this career because of its prestige, as the workload can occasionally be very heavy. In my opinion, the relatively high salary and business trips should only be secondary reasons for pursuing this career.

Relevance of the studied program

Studying at the University of Mannheim was relevant to my career. First, the University of Mannheim has an excellent reputation in the business world, especially in the consulting sector, and second, it was the events offered by companies at the University of Mannheim that sparked my interest in strategy consulting and McKinsey.
