Career

My career started with a vocational training at Braun GmbH to become an information technology officer. In order to have better career opportunities, I decided to study Business Informatics. During my studies, I was a research assistant in the IT department of the Mannheim Centre for European Social Research (MZES), which allowed met to earn some money and apply what I had learned. Later, I also worked as a research assistant at the dean's office of the School of Social Sciences. In 2010, I completed my Diplom degree. I stayed at the University of Mannheim and started working in the “Implementation of research administration” project of the University IT (UNIT). Then I was able to accompany the introduction of the campus management system. Today, I am coordinating the team of this project.

Tips for starting your career

The most important prerequisites for starting a career in this field are an interest in IT and the ability to work in a team. If, on top of that, you have strong analytical and logical thinking skills, you will have great job opportunities. You should be able to explain your ideas to people outside of the IT bubble and engage with customers. If you can understand the problems and concerns of the customers, you can find better solutions faster. Working on solutions together is more important and sustainable than just selling your software.

Relevance of the studied program

My studies sparked my interest in working in public administration. When I attended lectures on new public management, public services, e-government, and business informatics, I realized that there is much room for improvement in digitizing public administration. That is exactly what students of Business Informatics learn to do: to analyze business processes, find a solution with the IT department, develop a suitable software, and, finally, create an efficient and user-friendly back end and front end.
