Financial Literacy Across the Disciplines

29 November – 2 December 2021 | Mannheim, Germany

Financial literacy has become a key competence. Individuals face large challenges when it comes to making financial decisions. Long-term trends like demographic change and digitalisation have far-reaching implications for old-age provision, savings behaviour, interest rates, and financing conditions. Unforeseen events as the current COVID-19 pandemic add further pressure. How do individuals deal with these challenges? What do they know about finances and how does this influence their savings and consumption decisions? How can financial education support the development of financial competence? These and related questions are complex and multifaceted. They thus need to be addressed from various perspectives. These and similar questions are the focus of the Mannheim Institute for Financial Education (MIFE), which we would like to introduce with an inaugural conference. The four-day event is intended to provide an inter- and transdisciplinary platform for discussions on current research findings on financial literacy and financial education.

The first two days of the event will be dedicated to the public MIFE Inaugural Conference, which will feature invited talks by keynote speakers and other relevant academics. In addition, the conference will offer opportunities for exchange and networking between representatives from research, politics and practice. In addition, the 1st Deutsche Bundesbank Young Researcher Prize on Financial Literacy will be presented.

You can find the programme for the Inaugural Conference here:

Participation in the conference is via Zoom and is free of charge. Registration for the conference is possible via the following link:

In the second part of the event (day 3 and 4), the MIFE Early Career Workshop will take place, in which young researchers (doctoral students, postdocs, junior professors in early career phases) can present and discuss their research work. The MIFE Early Career Workshop was preceded by a Call for Papers and a selection process for participants.
