ERC Consolidator Grant for Prof. Irena Kogan

In her project, Irena Kogan examines how newly arrived male refugees find partners in Germany. “This is an important aspect of social integration”, emphasises the Mannheim sociologist. In this project she focuses on male refugees from Afghanistan and Syria between the ages of 18 and 30.

Ethnicity is one of the most important criteria when it comes to choosing a partner. This has been confirmed by sociological studies. Many male refugees cannot find partners from the same ethnicity because of a large surplus of men. Syrian and Afghan communities do not have long tradition in Germany. How do these migrants find their partners?

In order to answer this question the sociologist analyses the role of social media and dating-websites, on the one hand. This is important since refugees have affinity for internet usage. On the other hand, she examines the willingness of Germans and migrants living in Germany to enter relationships with refugees. Would they be willing to enter a relationship if they shared religion or language with the refugee?
