In Germany, 60 percent of the population are overweight, while one quarter of the population already suffers from severe overweight, a condition called obesity. Overweight and obesity, in turn, can lead to serious health consequences. In order to draw attention to this problem, the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina has published the discussion paper “Übergewicht und Adipositas: Thesen und Empfehlungen zur Eindämmung der Epidemie” (Overweight and obesity: Theses and recommendations for containing the epidemic). The paper discusses the causes and consequences of overweight and obesity on the basis of the latest research. It also suggests ways to improve the alarming situation. One of the authors of the discussion paper is Jutta Mata, Professor of Health Psychology at the University of Mannheim.
