In international rankings, European universities can rarely score top positions. They are often at a disadvantage when it comes to total numbers in categories relevant for the rankings. However, taking a closer look at how individual institutions are ranked at a national level proves to be all the more interesting. The Academic Ranking of World Universities 2019, the Shanghai Ranking, has recently confirmed the University of Mannheim’s pole position in Germany in its area of specialization, Economic and Social Sciences.
In seven of the fourteen subjects in the category Social Sciences, which includes Business Administration and Economics as well as Communication, the University of Mannheim is considered one of the best universities in Germany. In Political Sciences and Business Administration, the University of Mannheim has been ranked the best German university. In Finance and Communication, only one university respectively achieved a better score.
The Shanghai Ranking is an international ranking of higher education institutions that has been conducted by the Shanghai Jiao Tong University since 2003. Each year, over 1,200 higher education institutions worldwide are assessed on the basis of various indicators, such as the number of publications in renowned journals, the number of citations and the extent of international research collaborations. Consideration is also given to the academic influence of the higher education institutions.
