More than 130 Scholarship Holders in the Academic Year 2021/2022

On 28 October, the Deutschland Scholarship celebrated its 10th anniversary and 10 years of supporting young talents in the Aula of the University of Mannheim.

In the 2021/2022 academic year, the University of Mannheim supports 138 students with four different types of scholarships: the Deutschland Scholarship, the Opportunity Mannheim Scholarship of the University of Mannheim Foundation, the Mannheim Scholarship of the City of Mannheim and the DAAD Matching Funds Scholarship for international students. In addition, students of the University of Mannheim can receive the Elite Student Athletes Scholarship Rhine-Neckar Metropolitan Region and the Bronnbach Scholarship that aim at future decision-makers who would like to train their cultural skills.

“Our diverse scholarship program sends a strong message. It shows that we have talented students, that we promote their diversity and that we take their different needs seriously,” says Professor Thomas Puhl, President of the University of Mannheim, about the success story of the scholarship program of the University of Mannheim.

The University of Mannheim is particularly proud of the last 10 years during which it awarded Deutschland Scholarships and supported young talents. In the last decade, more than 1,700 Deutschland Scholarships were awarded to exceptionally motivated students who received personal and financial support. In the foundation year of the Deutschland Scholarship, approx. 40 scholarships were awarded. Compared to this, the University of Mannheim managed to almost triple the number of scholarships in the anniversary year and was able to offer the freedom and the possibility to get involved, to take on social responsibility and to work for outstanding academic achievements to 120 students. Furthermore, the University of Mannheim initiated the joint school scholarship project for the anniversary year of the Deutschland Scholarship. All in all, the professors of the University of Mannheim made private donations worth more than 13,000 euros. This made it possible to award nine additional Deutschland Scholarships. The school scholarships are a sign of solidarity of the university during these challenging pandemic times – and they acknowledge the outstanding achievements and the exceptional commitment of the Deutschland Scholarship holders.

The scholarship ceremony was mostly organized by the students themselves. Tom Könemann, Deutschland Scholarship holder since 2017, was the host of the entertaining event with approx. 120 guests. Furthermore, a few alumni gave short presentations on different voluntary projects, such as Weihua Wang who spoke about the non-profit social startup “MyBuddy”.

An important part of the scholarship ceremony was the personal handover of the certificates and during an informal get-together, the students did not only have the chance to meet with important contacts but also to thank their sponsors in person. “To me, the Deutschland Scholarship means acknowledgment and freedom and it encourages me to keep on striving for ambitious goals,” says the Deutschland Scholarship holder Annika Götz.
