Mannheim Sports Scholarship

Elite Student Athletes Scholarship Rhine-Neckar Metropolitan Region

Top-level athletes often experience increased stress-levels during their studies. Their busy training schedules and participation in competitions do not leave much time to prepare for classes and examinations. However, experience gained in sports also enables them to score high in their academic performance, provided that the conditions are right. The Greinert Family and the Dietmar Hopp Foundation sponsor top-level athletes during their studies through the Elite Student Athletes Scholarship Rhine-Neckar Metropolitan Region.

The scholarship holders receive EUR 200 each month for a period of at least two semesters. Student athletes who already benefit from another source of funding receive EUR 100 each month. An extension of the scholarship can be requested depending on the student's athletic achievements and provided that the requirements of the degree program are met.

In addition, the scholarship program provides student athletes with assistance in their studies, e.g. by financing the participation in tutorials, coordinating degree plans and exam schedules, and, if necessary, extending their standard period of study. Furthermore, the advisor for elite athletes is your personal point of contact, for example, in case that examination and competition dates overlap. The scholarship holders also receive support from the mentors and professors at the university.

The University of Mannheim has been a partner university of top-level sports since 2003.

Due to my athletic career, I travel a lot to different competitions and training camps. Thanks to the Elite Student Athletes Scholarship Rhine-Neckar Metropolitan Region, I am confident when it comes to completing my studies, since I can count on advice for individual solutions in case I miss an examination. This is something I am extremely thankful for.

How to apply

  • Requirements

In order to be eligible to apply, you need to be applying for or have been admitted to or enrolled in a first or second degree program with the aim of pursuing a degree at the University of Mannheim.

Additionally, applicants must meet at least one of the following criteria regarding their potential for peak performance:

    • doing a sport at a national high-performance training center that is part of the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB-Bundesstützpunkt), a comparable high-performance center, or a sport sponsored and promoted by the Dietmar Hopp Foundation.
    • membership in a national selection of elite athletes represented in international competitions (Bundeskaderstatus), e.g. Olympiakader (A-Kader), Perspektivkader (B-Kader), Nachwuchskader 1 (C-Kader), Nachwuchskader 2 (DC-Kader)
    • assessment by a national sports association including future performance prospects (Bundeseinschätzung mit Zielperspektive)
    • national league player (Bundesliga)
  • Application deadlines

You can apply for the next upcoming fall semester. Due to the current situation, the application deadline has been postponed to 20 August 2020. Please submit your application documents (both a printed version and a PDF file) to the advisor for elite athletes.

You will need to submit the following documents

  • Letter of motivation

In your letter of motivation, please indicate your degree program of choice and your sport, and explain the reasons why you are locally bound to Mannheim with respect to your athletic activity (Ortsbindung). The following question can help you when preparing your statement: Why would you like to receive a sports scholarship, and what would you like to achieve in your future sports career?

The letter of motivation should meet the general requirements and is an important criterion in the decision-making process.

  • Curriculum vitae and sports career

Please include a detailed, current curriculum vitae and a document describing your sports career.

  • Proof of your achievements in sports

Especially a written proof that you belong to a/an

    • Olympiakader (athletes qualifying for the Olympic Games, formerly A-Kader),
    • Perspektivkader (athletes with high chances of qualifying for the Olympic Games in the near future, formerly B-Kader),
    • Nachwuchskader 1 (emerging young top-athletes on a national level, formerly C-Kader),
    • Nachwuchskader 2 (emerging young top-athletes transitioning from the regional to the national level, formerly DC-Kader) or
    • national sports team.

In exceptional cases, applications from athletes who do not belong to a Kader may still be accepted. Possible reasons include injury or a stay abroad.

  • Sports club report

If you cannot provide proof of belonging to a selection of top-level athletes (Kader), we ask you to submit a sports club report instead.

  • University entrance qualification

For example, your Abitur or an equivalent qualification.

  • Latest Transcript of Records

This applies only to applicants already enrolled at the University of Mannheim.

Please submit your complete application documents in person at the office of the advisor for elite athletes. We need both a printed version and a PDF file of your application documents. We ask you to submit your application as early as possible, in order to ensure that we can request any missing documents before the application period closes, if necessary.

    Submitting your application

    • Appointment for the submission of the application

You have to submit your application in person at the office of the advisor for elite athletes. Please contact the advisor for elite athletes prior to the application deadline in order to schedule an appointment.

    • Personal interview

You have the opportunity to present yourself and your plans and goals both at university and in sports in a short interview. The advisors for elite athletes will examine your application documents and will let you know about any modifications that might be necessary. In exceptional cases (e.g. if the applicant is currently staying abroad), the interview can be conducted via telephone.

    • Selection criteria

Scholarship holders are selected based on their performance. In addition to the potential for development in their sport and the position achieved at national and international championships (the Olympic Games, world championships, and/or European championships), another selection criteria is the likelihood of the applicants successfully completing their studies.

The University of Mannheim is aware that doing high-performance sports while attending school can impact the grades achieved for university entrance qualifications (e.g. Abitur). For this reason, applicants’ suitability is determined through a special process carried out by a selection committee.

    • Information for prospective students

We can only consider your application for the Elite Student Athletes Scholarship Rhine-Neckar Metropolitan Region if you applied for a study place at the University of Mannheim in due time, or are already enrolled. Further information is provided here.

Athletes whose training activities are based in the region may be treated preferentially in the admissions process of the University of Mannheim. This procedure is based on the so-called “Profilquote”, a quota for the selection of applicants who are locally bound due to an activity of public interest (Ortsbindung im öffentlichen Interesse). As a student athlete bound to Mannheim and the surrounding area, your chances of being awarded a study place at the University of Mannheim increase.

When applying for a study place, please provide proof of your performance in competitive sports as well as an application according to section 8 Quota for Top-Level Athletes (§ 8 Auswahl nach Ortsbindung im öffentlichen Interesse) of the Regulations on Admission and Enrollment of the University of Mannheim. Please state in your application that you are locally bound to Mannheim because of your performance as top-level athlete.
