If you haven't done so already please take a look at the subject specific attachment of the CDSS study regulations in order to familiarize yourself with the course requirements over the six semesters.
Generally we recommend to complete the majority of courses in the first year, so that you can fully focus on the dissertation work in the following years. We realize that this isn't always possible and would like to give you an overview of which courses can be deferred into the second year and against which mandatory course requirements recognition of previously attended courses is possible.
Following an overview of mandatory courses across the three programs:
Fall term | Spring term |
Crafting Social Science Research | Dissertation Proposal Workshop |
Current Research Perspectives | Dissertation Proposal |
Mathematics for Social Scientists1, 2 | English Academic Writing |
Literature Review | Theory Building and Causal Inference (TBCI)1, 2 |
- CDSS Workshop in the respective discipline (years 1–3)
- Colloquia (years 2–3)
Deferral of courses
Across all three programs elective course requirements can be deferred into the second year.
For doctoral students in political science some mandatory courses can be deferred as well, these are:
Fall term | Spring term |
Game Theory1 | Advanced Quantitative Methods (AQM)1 |
Quantitative Methods (QM)1 |
If you decide to defer QM to the 2nd year it will impact on the spring term as well as you won't be able to attend AQM as QM is a prerequisite for it.
Course recognition
Courses completed during your Master's can be recognized against elective and some mandatory requirements (as indicated under1) of the CDSS course program. For this purpose please make sure to bring course descriptions/
1course recognition against this course is possible
2 Doctoral students in psychology have the possibility to take the SMiP Foundations I course instead of TBCI. Alternatively you can take it against Mathematics for Social Scientist and get 4 ECTS credited against the modul MET as well.
