Aphoristic, refreshing, cloudless ... you have to dig deep into the adjective box not to trivialize this big band with descriptions like “beautiful” or “cool”.
The University of Mannheim's Bigband consists of (former) students, doctoraal students and professors of the University – this correctly suggests a constant change in the team, which gives special significance to the consistently high standard. But maybe it's simply the institutional dynamics in the line-up that always serve up a refreshingly different and powerful load of accurate brass.
Sounds crazy, but it is! By the end of the concert, some music stands will be crazy as well, because with the current set, the versatile combination of swing, jazz and funk convinces both trained and untrained ears. Jochen Welsch directs the College Jazz Orchestra and also curates the Big Band Chamber Concerts. For more than 20 semesters, a heterogeneous program from jazz classics and modern jazz to self-conceived works has marked the crowning finale of the rehearsals, accompanied by enthusiastic applause from the audience.
