Documents and selection procedure
Application documents
The Application consists of 4 Parts, written in English:
1. a brief cover letter (max. 1 page)
Please address the following points:
- By how many credit hours (SWS) would you like to reduce your teaching load in connection with a substitute professorship (5 to 9 SWS)? Please, follow this link for further information on the intranet (PDF, 222 kB).
- Expected outputs: paper, conference presentation, funding application, etc.
- Guest researcher invitations: 1–3 researchers for workshops and/
or one researcher for extended stay, including how their expertise supports your research
2. a 3–4-page outline of your planned research project at CAS
Start with an abstract including your thesis or research question. In the following, please answer the below listed questions:
What do you want to do?
- What research areas does your project focus on, and what is the state of the art in those areas?
- How does your research project relate to the existing state of the art?
How would you like to do it?
- What methods would you like to use? How do you plan to use them?
- What are interdisciplinary aspects about your research project?
Why does it matter?
- What makes my research project a strong candidate for CAS funding?
- An outline of the societal relevance of the project idea, please describe the relevance for an interested general science audience
Please note that applications can also be submitted by teams of up to three researchers.
In the case of a team application:
- Specify the tasks of each member, each team member is asked to outline their individual contribution to the joint project.
- Sprcify how you plan to cooperate, and in which formats you plan to do so.
- Finally, the outline should mention any prior joint work of the team members.
3. CV (max. 4 pages)
- Please submit your CV based on the format of the German Research Foundation (DFG) CV, you can find a template based on the DFG CV here. (DOCX, 32 kB) Your CV can be up to four pages.
- If you have any outreach activities, please mention them here as well (e.g., an article in a newspaper or vocational outlet or similar, meetings with policy makers, public lectures etc.)
4. Consent to the processing of optional information in the CV and personal data pursuant to Article 9 GDPR
- Please include the linked document in the PDF you generate with all your application documents. Including this document constitutes consent to the processing of optional information contained in the CV template you may have submitted, as well as any other special categories of personal data (Art. 9 GDPR) you may have provided in other parts of your application.

Next steps in the selection procedure
1. The Scientific Advisory Board of CAS – composed of external professors – evaluates a cohort based on the following criteria:
- Potential of the submitted idea for interdisciplinary collaboration
- Innovative character of the research idea
- Excellence of the applicant’s research record
- Societal relevance of the research topic
2. The CAS Directorate makes the final selection, additionally considering:
- Alignment with the University of Mannheim’s research priorities
- Fit with the ideas of other fellows to enable potential collaborations
- Gender equality and diversity aspects (e.g., gender, age, etc.)
Final selection decisions will be made by mid-April. Successful applicants will be informed immediately afterwards.
Before the Fellowship:
If you are selected, the CAS office will contact you to plan guest researcher visits and develop the fellowship's structured joint program.
During the Fellowship:
You participate in the structured joint program and report on the progress of your research idea. A shared-desk workspace is provided, along with group workspaces and conference facilities for fellow teams.
