Freunde der Universität Mannheim
The University of Mannheim has a clear goal: It aims to be one of the leading international universities in the field of economic and social sciences.
The organization “Freunde der Universität Mannheim” (Friends of the University of Mannheim) supports the university on its way to the top. In return, the university gives a lot back to its supporters – for example, they receive privileged access to outstanding students and scientists. We will present our goals and services on these pages.
Dr. Zimmermann says goodbye after 25 years

Dr. Josef Zimmermann, Chairman of the Board of the Freunde der Universität Mannheim (FUM), has handed over the chairmanship to his successor Andreas Hilgenstock in July 2024. After 25 years with the association and 18 years as Chairman, the 76-year-old Zimmermann is leaving the FUM Board for reasons of age. It is a difficult farewell, but not a final one, as Zimmermann will continue to serve on the Board of the University of Mannheim Foundation.
Mr. Hilgenstock is a member of the Supervisory Board of Engelhorn KGaA Mannheim. He is also involved in many committees in Mannheim, including the advisory board of the Heinrich Vetter Foundation, as chairman of the advisory board of the Friends and Sponsors of the Nationaltheater Mannheim and as a member of the board of trustees of the Kunsthalle.
The starting position is good. The University of Mannheim is considered one of the leading research institutions in its field in Germany. Surveys among HR managers, research rankings and analyses by leading business media attest to the exceptional position of Mannheim's Business School and Department of Economics. However, the international competition to attract the brightest minds has increased significantly over the last ten years. The University of Mannheim wants to accept the challenge and be successful in this competition.
