CAS

Center for Advanced Studies University of Mannheim

Our vision: The Center for Advanced Studies offers researchers the freedom to develop new research ideas together. This can lead to pioneering (collaborative) research. Perhaps the most important aspect of a Center for Advanced Studies is interdisciplinary collaboration.

The first call for applications for fellows of the Center for Advanced Studies University of Mannheim (CAS) will start in April 2025. The first fellows will begin their research at the CAS in February 2026. With the CAS, the university is strengthening the framework conditions for successful collaborative research projects, fulfilling a key element of its strategic plan 2024 to 2028.

The CAS considers itself a lab in which Mannheim professors can experiment with their research ideas. The CAS has achieved its goal if the fellows further develop these ideas into research projects, after their time at the CAS has ended.

About us

Two bodies form the core of the CAS: the internally staffed Board of Directors and the externally staffed Scientific Advisory Board. These two bodies select the fellows in a two-stage process.

Fellowships

The fellowships are aimed at professors of the University of Mannheim and are usually awarded for one semester. To ease the burden on the fellows, the CAS pays for a full-time teaching replacement (W3) and provides them with their own rooms.

Collaborations

For the CAS, inviting international researchers as visiting researchers is just as much a part of the program as collaborating with existing research institutions inside and outside the University of Mannheim.
