Speaker Bio
Inge van den Bijgaart is an Associate Professor at the Utrecht University School of Economics, where she conducts research on the economics of environmental policy, with a particular focus on climate policy. Her research examines questions such as the economic repercussions of climate policies, how these effects depend on policy design, the economic justification for different climate policy choices, and which policy mixes are most appropriate in different contexts.

Over the past years, Inge van den Bijgaart has published research on climate policy for emission mitigation and green innovation. She has also co-authored research on the economics of meat taxation and on how health considerations, in addition to environmental concerns, can justify higher fuel taxes. Her recent and ongoing research focuses on the policy interventions required to decarbonize basic materials industries, including the role of green industrial policies. This research is supported by FORMAS, the Swedish Research Council for Sustainable Development.

In 2024, Inge van den Bijgaart was awarded an NWO Vidi grant, which she will use to study the interplay between firm heterogeneity and climate policy. This project will run from 2025 to 2030.

Inge van den Bijgaart occasionally contributes to public debates on policy issues and economic developments related to her research expertise.

At Utrecht University, she teaches topics related to economic growth, climate change, and environmental policy. This includes a module on sustainable growth in the BSc course Intermediate Macroeconomics: Growth and Sustainability, lectures on the economics of climate change in the university-wide BSc course Climate and Society, as well as the coordination and teaching of the Research Master course Advanced Macroeconomics and the MSc course Environmental Economics and Policy.

From September 2016 to November 2021, Inge van den Bijgaart was an Assistant Professor at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden. She obtained her PhD from Tilburg University in 2016.
