Degree procedures

latest update: 3/26 – no claim to completeness

Please read the degree regulations (Promotionsordnung) carefully. Read the Code of Good Research Practice as well as the department’s addendum on coauthored papers. These documents can be found here

The maximum duration of the doctorate should generally not exceed six years (see degree regulations §7 (2) ). An extension is only possible in justified cases and upon request.

We recommend planning your thesis submission/defense well in advance. Keep in mind that the mandatory display period needs to fall within the lecture period (see below).

  • How to submit your thesis

    • Submit a written informal request to the Dean or Head of Department to obtain a doctoral degree, with the following enclosed (see §8):
      • the doctoral dissertation, submitted in triplicate and also in
           electronic form on a suitable data carrier (at best CD-ROM;
according to our IT colleague Thomas Behles, these can currently
still be burned at the VWL PC Pool),
      • a declaration that you completed the work independently, that it is your
own work and that no other sources or means except the ones listed
           have been employed
      • the declaration of consent to storage and plagiarism checks (see § 8
           (2b)),
      • the declaration of consent that the submitted dissertation copies
and the data carrier become the property of the university,
      • a copy of your signed PhD milestones,
      • a written consent “I consent to make my dissertation available
online via ILIAS for the required three-week display period from the
time the reports are submitted, in order to give the members of the
doctoral committee the opportunity to inspect the dissertation, in
accordance with Section 9(2) of the Doctoral Regulations. Or, if
access to ILIAS is not possible, to send it to the members of the
doctoral committee upon request by email.”
    • The transcript of records will be requested by the dean's office directly from the CDSE.
    • Please state the title of your dissertation, the name of the referee and co-referee, as well as your current email address and postal address.
    • Please bring all documents to the Dean's office. You are welcome to send all the documents by email in advance, but it is also absolutely necessary to bring everything signed in original.
    • The required three weeks display period needs to fall within the lecture period. If the required display period would fall within the semester break, you must submit a “Request for Display Outside of the lecture period.” This request must include a valid reason. The department spokesperson will review and decide on the request, and you will receive notification.
