What is a Uni-ID?
Your Uni-ID is your personal user ID of the University of Mannheim. It is used to verify the identity of members of the University of Mannheim. Together with the individual password it is your login information for many of our services, e.g. Portal² or our Wi-Fi.
What is the MyUni-ID portal?
MyUni-ID is a central portal where you can manage various features related to your personal Uni-ID, depending on your status.
To log in, you will need your Uni-ID and the corresponding password.

How do I receive my Uni-ID?
Uni-ID for students of the University of Mannheim:
You can find your Uni-ID and initial password on the homepage of the campus management system Portal² under Uni-ID (personal user ID) of the University of Mannheim. Log in by entering the login information of your online application. Once you have changed your initial password, you can log in with your Uni-ID and newly set password .Students from cooperating institutions (e.g., Baden-Wuerttemberg Cooperative State University Mannheim, Mannheim University of Music and Performing Arts):
In order to obtain your Uni-ID and ecUM card, you must apply for a library card. Please follow the instructions on the website of the University Library.Uni-ID for employees and non-enrolled doctoral students:
If you are a new employee at the University of Mannheim, a personal Uni-ID is automatically created. A confidential letter with the Uni-ID will be sent to you via internal mail. If a Uni-ID already exists (for example if you are first a student and are then employed by the university), you will keep your Uni-ID and a new one will not be generated. In this case, we ask you to submit an online request to update the status of your Uni-ID via the MyUni-ID portal.Doctoral students who are not enrolled and have not been employed by the university before, are asked to contact their department or the chair of their doctoral supervisor to request a Uni-ID. If your status has changed, we ask you to submit a signed request with the signature of your supervising professor. Please use the online change request on the MyUni-ID portal for this purpose.
Employees of cooperating institutions (Heidelberg University, Technical University of Applied Sciences Mannheim, ZEW – Leibniz Centre for European Economic Research, GESIS – Leibniz-Institute for the Social Sciences, Leibniz-Institut für Deutsche Sprache, Evaluationsagentur Baden-Württemberg, Ludwigshafen University of Business and Society) must apply for a library card to request a Uni-ID and ecUM. Please follow the instructions on the website of the University Library.
Uni-IDs must be renewed every year. You will receive an automatic notification which will be sent to your university e-mail address.
For non-enrolled doctoral students who are managed by the doctoral student management (Doktorand*innenverwaltung), renewal of the doctoral student’s existing Uni-ID must be requested by the doctoral student manager via e-mail (id.unituni-mannheim.de).
If a Uni-ID is blocked, for example, because the employment has ended, you will receive a notification which will be sent to your university e-mail address.

How do I change my Uni-ID password?
Please note that you will need to provide the changed password for your Uni-ID to various services. As a rule, you will be asked to enter your new password, e.g., in your e-mail client. However, there is one exception: For the Wi-Fi connection, you have to manually remove eduroam from your device and reconnect. Instructions can be found on the Wi-Fi instructions page under: Manually removing the eduroam connection.
Step 1 – Login
Log in to the MyUni-ID portal of the University of Mannheim with your Uni-ID and current password.
Now click on “continue” in the “Password” box. On the following page, select “continue” under “Change Password.”
Step 2 – Create a new password
Please fill in the form by
- indicating your current password in the field “Current password,”
- creating a new password in the “New password” field, taking into account our instructions on choosing a password,
- repeating your new password in the field “Confirm New Password.”
Then please click on the “Change” button. Your new password is now active.
How do I reset my forgotten password via my private e-mail address?
1. You can reset your password via the MyUni-ID portal of the University of Mannheim
2. To reset your password, you need an activation code and a confirmation link. To request these, please enter your Uni-ID and date of birth.
- Students: Click on “Request confirmation link.” Please remember or write down the four-digit activation code displayed after doing so. Continue with step 3.
- Employees: To reset your password, an additional security factor is needed. Please select one of the following two options:
- Your ecUM No.:
Enter the number on your ecUM card and your activation code will be displayed immediately. Please remember or write down the four-digit code that is displayed after you click on “Request confirmation link.” - E-mail address of a colleague:
Enter a colleague's e-mail address. This person will then receive your activation code after you click on “Request confirmation link.”

3. A confirmation e-mail will be sent to the e-mail address you provided. Follow the link in your e-mail to reset your password. You will need the activation code to do this.
How do I reset my forgotten password on campus?
If you did not provide a private e-mail address, please contact IT support. (Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, 10 a.m.–2 p.m. at the IT Service Desk at the InfoCenter, Schloss Schneckenhof Süd)
Please note that you must present your ID card to reset your password.

How do I manage a separate password for the Wi-Fi?
The Department of Information Security recommends that you set up a separate password used exclusively for Wi-Fi and VPN in the MyUni-ID portal. After setting up the Wi-Fi and VPN password, you will then have two passwords linked with your Uni-ID. One password for Wi-Fi and VPN and the regular password for your Uni-ID for all other services.
What are the requirements my password has to meet?
Choosing a password
Please note the following password requirements at the University of Mannheim:
A secure password ...- is at least 14 characters long (in the case of privileged accounts even 20 characters)
- includes 3 of the following 4 types of characters: uppercase letters, lowercase letters, special characters, and/
or digits - is for personal use only and must not be shared with others
- is unique to each user account used.
Tip: The longer a password, the more secure it is!
You may only use the following characters:
- lowercase letters (a–z, no umlauts)
- uppercase letters (A–Z, no umlauts)
- digits (0–9)
- as well as these special characters: ! @ # $ % ( ) _ + – = : ; " , . ? /
How do I enter or change my private e-mail address?
No security question for password reset
When choosing a password, you will not be asked to come up with a security question. Instead, you can enter your private e-mail address. This allows you to reset your password by yourself if you have forgotten it.
- Follow the link to the MyUni-ID portal of the University of Mannheim.
- Click on “Password” to manage your password.
- Then follow the instructions under “Save your private e-mail address.”
- Before you can continue, you must verify your identity. To do so, please log in with your Uni-ID.
- After successfully logging in, you can now enter a private e-mail address.
- A verification link will be sent to your e-mail address. If you have not received an e-mail, please also check your spam folder.
- After successful verification, you can now reset your password using the e-mail address you provided.
If you wish to withdraw your consent to the use of your private e-mail address for password reset purposes, follow steps 1 to 4. After successfully logging in, you can select the “Withdrawal” button at the bottom of the page to complete the process.
How do I change my default e-mail address?
- Log in to MyUni-ID.
- Go to E-Mail | Uni-ID and then to E-mail addresses.
- You will see a list of your e-mail addresses. To change your default address, select your desired e-mail address and click Save.
Please note: This option is only available if a university e-mail account is linked to your Uni-ID.
How do I change the notification for external e-mails?
E-mails coming from outside the University of Mannheim are marked with a notification at the top.
- Log in to MyUni-ID.
- Go to E-Mail | Uni-ID and then to External e-mails.
- Select your preferred option and click Save.
