ILIAS is the central platform to exchange files & information between lecturers <-> students and also between students themselves.

Summary

When you go to ilias.uni-mannheim.de and log yourself in, you will be shown a summary of all courses and groups that you're registered in on the front page. You can always return to this summary by clicking on Personal Desktop > Overview.

Under Personal Desktop > Settings > Desktop-Filter-Settings you can make your own selection of which courses should be shown, or filtered out, by selecting the semesters you want to in- and exclude in your summary.

Access to ILIAS through the Portal²

You can access ILIAS directly through the Portal² via 2 ways:

  • Clicking on the tab “My Studies" > “My E-Learning (ILIAS)”.
  • Searching for a course in Portal² and switching to its details-page. There you will find the link “Go to ILIAS-group”, which will get you directly to the related ILIAS-course.

Admittance

Depending on the particular ILIAS-course, you can be prompted to admit yourself before you can access the course. There are several ways of admitting:

  • Join Directly --> You can enter the course by clicking on the join button.
  • Join with Course Password --> You can join the course with the course password, which you have received from your course-lecturer.
  • Request Membership --> You will be prompted to type a message to request your membership in this course. The course-owner will then accept or reject your request.
  • No Self-enrolment --> The course-owner has not yet activated this course. If this persists for a longer period of time and you need the information in this course, please contact the responsible lecturer.

If the admittance for this course was done via Portal², you will be automatically admitted to the related ILIAS-course. If this isn't the case, please inform the lecturer first, before requesting support. They might have not yet activated the automatic admittance-option.

Leaving a Course

If you want to leave an ILIAS-course, it is important that you leave the group/s in this course first, before you leave the whole course.
The easiest way to leave a course is via the summary front page and the option “Unsubscribe from Course”:

Mail

From time to time you will receive messages in ILIAS from lecturers or other students. You will get a notification icon if that is the case:

Please keep in mind that for communication between students and all university staff, the university-email is the mandatory channel and not ILIAS. You can use the webmailer to access your university-email-account.

Tip:
In the course-settings you can specify for each course individually if you want to receive an email whenever there is a new change in the course (e.g. a new file was uploaded).
