Creating and Managing Mailing Lists in Mailman

Mailman is a program for managing mailing lists. You can use the program to create mailing lists to send messages to several recipients simultaneously. Mailman should be used if you want to send e-mails to a large group of recipients.

Why is it useful to create mailing lists?
If e-mails are sent to a large number of recipients, it is possible that our mail systems or the receiving mail system marks them as spam, restricts them or simply refuses to accepts them. In order to avoid this, we recommend setting up a mailing list if you want to send an e-mail to a large number of recipients.

Creating a mailing list

The IT support will create a new mailing list for you. Please complete the online form Requesting a mailing list in order to do so. As soon as the mailing list has been created, you will receive a confirmation e-mail with the login information and other details.

Please note:

  • The name of the mailing list will be used as e-mail address for receiving and sending e-mails. Please use only lower case letters. After the list has been created, it is no longer possible to change the name.
  • You have to name an owner of the mailing list. As soon as the list has been created, the owner will be notified and will receive the password for the list. The owner is able to change the password and make others co-owners or moderators.

Subscribing to a mailing list

Go to https://mailman.uni-mannheim.de. Here you will find an overview of all public mailing lists. In order to see the information page of a non-public mailing list, you only need the name of this list. Just insert a slash and the name of the list to the URL above.

Example: You want to go to the details page for the list “Testverteiler”. The URL is mailman.uni-mannheim.de/testverteiler.
