Yale Exchange Scholar Program – Application Process
Each year, CDSE students have the opportunity to spend either one semester or, preferably, a full academic year at Yale University as Exchange Scholars. The program is intended for doctoral students in their third year and beyond. During their stay at Yale, students will continue their research, interact with Yale faculty and PhD students, and may also attend selected field courses.
Step 1: Apply to the CDSE
Please submit the following documents as one PDF file to cdse.gessuni-mannheim.de:
- A letter of motivation, highlighting any links between your research and research conducted at Yale
- Your CV
- A research sample (working paper, seminar presentation slides, or, for current second-year students, a term paper)
In addition, your advisor should send a brief statement of support directly to the CDSE explaining how you would benefit from the exchange.
Please also indicate whether you are interested in one semester (and if so, which semester) or two semesters.

Step 2: Nomination by the CDSE and Acceptance of the Offer
Following the internal selection process, the CDSE will nominate selected candidates and confirm its support for their participation.
If nominated, please let us know whether you accept the opportunity to go to Yale. In addition, please send us:
- your research field(s),
- the Yale faculty members you would like to contact.
The Yale administration requests this information in order to coordinate the allocation of exchange scholars to faculty members.
Step 3: Find a Host Professor at Yale
After accepting the nomination, please contact Yale faculty members to identify a professor who is willing to host you during your stay.
Please note that your current supervisor may be asked to provide a reference letter in support of your application.
Inform the CDSE as soon as you receive positive feedback from a potential host. If you encounter difficulties finding a suitable host, please let us know as early as possible. Do not wait until shortly before Yale's application deadline, as there is often little that can be done at that stage to facilitate the process.
Step 4: Clarify Your Funding
Before submitting your Yale application, please clarify how your stay will be financed.
- Doctoral researchers with departmental positions can generally continue their employment during the exchange. Please discuss the distribution of your teaching obligations with the CDSE Center Management.
- Doctoral researchers employed by a chair should clarify with their direct supervisor whether their position can continue during the exchange period.
- Doctoral researchers employed at ZEW should discuss funding arrangements internally.
- G&W scholarship holders should discuss continued scholarship funding with Prof. Adam.
- Doctoral researchers receiving a CDSE scholarship should contact the CDSE Center Management to discuss financing during their stay.
The CDSE will cover:
- One round-trip flight and trains
- Tuition fee of USD 2,500 per semester
Please note that Yale will charge this tuition fee directly to your student account during your stay. You will initially need to pay the tuition fee yourself and can subsequently request reimbursement from the CDSE Center Management after your return.
Step 5: Formally Apply to Yale
Once you have secured a host professor and clarified your funding, please submit your formal application via Yale's Exchange Scholar application portal:
gsas.yale.edu/admissions/non-degree-application-process/exchange-scholars
Application deadlines:
- October 1 (Spring Term)
- March 1 (Fall Term / Full Academic Year)
Detailed application instructions and additional information can be found on Yale's Exchange Scholar website. Applicants are also strongly encouraged to review the FAQ for incoming exchange scholars:
gsas.yale.edu/exchange-scholar-faqs-incoming-yale
For your Yale application, you will require the following documents from the CDSE:
- Letter of Recommendation
- Confirmation of Financial Support during your stay at Yale
- Confirmation of Enrollment
Please contact the CDSE Center Management well in advance to request these documents.
Step 6: Apply for External Funding
We strongly encourage all participants to explore external funding opportunities as early as possible. Since many funding schemes have early deadlines, it is advisable to begin searching for suitable fellowships well in advance.
Examples include:
- DAAD Research Scholarship for Doctoral Students
- DAAD Baden-Württemberg Scholarship
- Fulbright Scholarship
- ERP Scholarship Program (Studienstiftung des deutschen Volkes)
- FAZIT Foundation Doctoral Scholarship (for doctoral researchers facing financial hardship)
Step 7: Apply for a Visa
Once you have been admitted by Yale University, you should begin the visa application process as early as possible. The required immigration documents will be issued by Yale after your admission has been finalized.
Please note that visa appointments and processing times can be lengthy. We therefore strongly recommend starting the process immediately after receiving your admission documents from Yale.
Detailed guidance on visa requirements and procedures will be provided by Yale and can also be found on the Exchange Scholar website and in the FAQ for incoming exchange scholars. Make sure to carefully review all instructions and submit the required documents on time.
If your visa application is delayed, encounters complications, or is denied, you must inform the CDSE Center Management immediately. Early communication is essential, as visa issues may affect your participation in the exchange program, travel arrangements, enrollment at Yale, and funding arrangements. The sooner we are informed, the better we can evaluate possible next steps and provide support where feasible.
For any further questions regarding the Yale Exchange Scholar Program, please contact the CDSE Center Management.
