17th SCANCOR workshop on institutional analysis organised by Ifm

We look back on an intensive one-week workshop on institutional analysis.

In the last week of August 2019, from 26 to 30 August, the 17th SCANCOR Workshop on Institutional Analysis took place at the University of Mannheim. The Scandinavian Consortium for Organizational Research (SCANCOR) promotes research in organisational social science in a transnational network of researchers (https://scancor.org/). Its member institutes in Scandinavia and Europe support working visits and residencies at Stanford and Harvard Universities. SCANCOR also sponsors conferences, workshops and mentoring opportunities worldwide. An important event is the SCANCOR workshop, which takes place every year at one of the partner institutions. This year's workshop was hosted by the Institute for SME Research (ifm) and co-organised by Woody Powell, Achim Oberg, Dominika Wruk and Michael Woywode.

The morning speakers included Woody Powell (Stanford University) and Dominika Wruk (ifm, University of Mannheim), Sarah Soule (Stanford University) and Philipp Poschmann (University of Jena), Bruce Carruthers (Northwestern University) and Henning Hillmann (University of Mannheim), Stine Grodal (Boston University) and Michael Woywode (ifm, University of Mannheim), as well as Grégoire Croidieu (EM-Lyon), Renate Meyer (WU Vienna) and Achim Oberg (WU Vienna, ifm University of Mannheim). Over the course of the week, they presented and discussed their current research projects in 10 lectures.

25 doctoral students from all over Europe successfully participated in the afternoon doctoral workshop. International lecturers analysed theoretical concepts, discussed recent work and debated new methodological tools that deepen the institutional agenda. Particular attention was paid to the emergence, persistence and change of institutions and the contribution of institutional analysis to understanding current social, environmental and economic challenges. Another focus was on methods of comparative, archival, network and visual analysis. Finally, we addressed issues of contestation and contestation over institutions and organisations.

We would like to thank all the scholars for their participation in this week. Special thanks go to the international lecturers and speakers who shared their latest findings with us in stimulating presentations. We would also like to thank all the PhD students for their dedicated participation in the workshop. It was a great pleasure to welcome you to the 17th SCANCOR Workshop on Institutional Analysis at the University of Mannheim!
