Recording Studios

In the audio and video studio of the University of Mannheim, employees and students can produce their own recordings with professional help. The University IT (UNIT) and the Teaching and Learning Center (ZLL) are happy to support you and your projects – from the script to the editing process. You can use the studio by appointment and after an individual meeting.

  • Audio studio

You want to record your lecture in perfect sound quality?
You need audio clips for your studies, for a seminar deadline or another university project?

Book a slot in the university’s audio studio! The studio is located in Schloss Westflügel. You will find everything you need for the implementation of your project: high-performance equipment, professional software, and a friendly and competent team.
All members of the University of Mannheim have the possibility to produce professional audio recordings.
Our sound booth is soundproofed, has room for one person and allows you to make interference-free recordings of, for example, lectures, talks and tutorials.
The new studio setup also allows for recordings of up to four people for interviews and podcasts.

Only UNIT employees are allowed to operate the devices.
We support you throughout the recording – not only for the technical, but also for the didactic and error-free implementation of your recording. We are also happy to support the editing process in the Media Editing Room in W347.

  • Video studio

Teleprompter, spotlights and co. – we have extended our studio services since 2019!
In addition to the sound studio, we also have a professionally equipped video studio with the latest equipment. We are continually updating the equipment. Since we have moved to B6, 23–25 in 2022, we can also offer, thanks to the kind support of ABSOLVENTUM, various recording scenarios in the best quality possible.

All members of the University of Mannheim can book a slot and will benefit from our consulting services.

Do you need help in creating your script or the didactic basis of your script? The team of the Teaching and Learning Center (ZLL) is happy to help you. If you have didactic questions, please contact Annika Frank (annika.frank@uni-mannheim.de).

If you have technical or organizational questions related to the use of the studio, please contact Laura Gelb (laura.gelb@uni-mannheim.de). In a preliminary meeting, we work with you to find out which implementation options and services are suitable for your individual project.

You can use the video studio for numerous teaching concepts and other formats, such as Talking Head videos, interviews and laudatory speeches. You can choose from varios backgrounds, lounge furniture and up to five camera perspectives.

We support you throughout the recording – not only for the technical, but also for the didactic and error-free implementation of your recording. Recordings in the video studio are a lot of work and many people are involved. This service is primarily intended for important and long-term university projects. This means that teachers should use the video recordings for several semesters.

Only UNIT employees are allowed to operate the devices. We also support you during the editing process: The team of the Teaching and Learning Center can edit the material, if agreed upon in advance, or can show you everything you need to know about the media editing room in W347.

  • Before the recording – preparations

Learn more about what you need to observe or bring for your recording:

Audio studio: Please practice your script in advance so that we can start recording straight away. Please bring the script in digital form on a USB stick. On this stick, we will store your final file (as .mp3 or .wav). Please think of bringing non-sparkling water so that you can moisturize your mouth during breaks and protect your voice.

    • Script
    • USB stick (minimum 8 GB)
    • Non-sparkling water without sugar

Video studio: You will achieve the best results if you practice your script in advance and are able to speak freely. A teleprompter is available, but the video recording will seem more natural, if you know what you are going to say and you incorporate gestures and facial expressions.
Please do also bring your script as .PDF or .DOCX file on an USB stick (Please note: The teleprompter only shows text, without links, images, etc.) Please think of bringing non-sparkling water so that you can moisturize your mouth during breaks and protect your voice.

    • USB stick with a script for the speaker for the teleprompter (.PDF or .DOCX file)
    • Non-sparkling water without sugar

It is up to you to decide on what to wear. You can wear the clothes you feel comfortable in. The clothes should be clean, without lint, and match the content of the video. If you have several outfits to choose from, please bring two to three alternatives and we will decide together which one is best for your video.
In order to make the recording as smooth and camera-friendly as possible, please observe the following:

    • Clothing: no red clothes, no small, confusing patterns (e.g. small squares, houndstooth, bouclé etc.), no dress (so that the microphone transmitter can be hidden neatly and without effort), white shirts or blouses only in combination with a dark jacket or blazer.
    • Make-up: subtle make-up is welcome, but your face will be powdered by the recording staff on set. Please do not apply glossy lipstick or lipgloss.

Workshops and events
