The economics of carbon dioxide removals – an industry perspective
Monday, November 10, 2025 –05:15 – 06:30 PM (CET)
This session will be held as a hybrid event. To join in person, you can come to room O 131 (i.e., room 131 on level 1 of the east wing of the castle). To join virtually, please register in advance using this link.
Seminar Abstract
Even in a largely decarbonized economy, some emissions are hard to abate, or their abatement is extremely costly. These residual emissions could be offset through negative emissions. Bioenergy with Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (BECCUS) is one approach to achieving permanent carbon dioxide removal (CDR) from biomass power plants or energy-from-waste facilities.
The lecture will address the following questions:
- How much CDR is needed to cost-efficiently achieve climate targets?
- What are the potentials for CDR from BECCUS in Germany? How will costs evolve, and what are the current revenue opportunities?
- What could a market design look like to enable BECCUS to be financed purely through market mechanisms? Additionally, how could early adopters be supported financially during the ramp-up phase?
- Is a regulatory framework necessary for the development of CO₂ transport networks and storage infrastructures?
- What lessons can we learn from international examples (e.g., the UK, Sweden, USA, France, Japan, etc.)?
The lecture will include examples of specific projects and investment plans by MVV in the BECCUS sector.
