Policy brief “Self-employment of refugees and immigrants – an alternative route into the labour market or a professional dead end?”

In the second policy brief of the Mercator Foundation-funded project “Skilled workers of the future or marginalised in the long term?”, Dr Christoph Sajons, Ralf Philipp and Carina Hartmann examine the possible role of self-employment as a way for refugees and immigrants to enter the German labour market. The researchers from the ifm's “Labour Market and Self-Employment” research department are tracking the start-ups of immigrants in the 2010s in the microcensus panel and looking at their employment and income situation over several years. On the other hand, a field experiment is being conducted to investigate whether self-employment that has been abandoned reduces the chances of immigrants applying for salaried employment at a later date.
