Academic Speed Dating – Exploring Frontiers: Data Science for Information Systems and Society (Thu, October 16, 2025, 2:00 p.m., B6, 30–32 Bauteil E-F, 008.1)

The next Academic Speed Dating event on the topic of Exploring Frontiers: Data Science for Information Systems and Society will take place on October 16 at 2:00 p.m. in B6, 30–32 Bauteil E-F, 008.1. We are pleased to announce that two professors from the university will be keynote speakers this time. Prof. Dr. Jens Förderer will speak on the topic of “Quasi-Experiments in the Digital Economy: Best Practices & Applications.” In addition, Prof. Dr. Sebastian Stier will present on the topic of “Unlocking Digital Behavioral Data: New User-Centered Approaches for Social Science Research.”

This event offers a unique opportunity to exchange ideas with fellow researchers from various disciplines and explore the role of data science in academic work. Guests who wish to attend without giving a presentation are welcome. However, we particularly encourage researchers to actively contribute by giving a short presentation on their ongoing projects. There are five presentation slots available, which will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.

This semester, the session will focus on the topic: “Exploring Frontiers: Data Science for Information Systems and Society.” However, all interested researchers are welcome.

The event will begin with a keynote speech by Prof. Dr. Jens Förderer, one of Germany's leading scientists in the field of digital platforms and innovation. Prof. Förderer holds the Chair of Information Systems II at the University of Mannheim. His award-winning research has been published in high-ranking journals such as Management Science, Information Systems Research, and MIS Quarterly. His research has been supported by highly competitive grants, including an ERC Starting Grant from the European Research Council. His lecture is entitled “Quasi-Experiments in the Digital Economy: Best Practices & Applications.”

Afterwards,  Prof. Dr. Sebastian Stier will give a keynote speech on “Unlocking Digital Behavioral Data: New User-Centered Approaches for Social Science Research.” He is Professor of Computational Social Science at the University of Mannheim and Scientific Director of the Computational Social Science Department at GESIS – Leibniz Institute for the Social Sciences. Recent work has been published in journals such as the American Political Science Review, the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), and the European Journal of Political Research. Moreover, he leads several joint research projects funded by major institutions such as the DFG, the Leibniz Association, and the Volkswagen Foundation.

The MCDS Academic Speed Dating aims to promote interdisciplinary exchange and collaboration among researchers at the University of Mannheim.
