AI in Central Banking – Francesco Cometa

At a recent talk at the University of Mannheim, Francesco Cometa shared insights into current applications of AI in central banking and banking supervision, highlighting ongoing developments and key discussion points in the field.

Francesco Cometa, Principal Supervisor at the European Central Bank, returned to the University of Mannheim to give a lecture on “AI in Central Banking.”

The presentation outlined current applications of artificial intelligence in monetary policy and banking supervision. Using examples from practice, Cometa described how AI is being used in areas such as data analysis, risk identification, and decision support.

The event brought together participants from various disciplines, including data science, economics, business informatics, and finance. The discussion addressed topics such as the role of AI in supervisory processes, questions of explainability, and the evolving skill requirements at the intersection of finance and technology.

The lecture was organized by Antje Clasen and supported by the Mannheim Center for Data Science.
