Living at the Guesthouse

  • Keys and moving in

To allow you to organize your arrival flexibly, we will deposit your keys at the Reception Desk of the University of Mannheim (Carl-Theodor-Platz, 68159 Mannheim), where you can collect them at any time on presenting your ID.
The Reception Desk is staffed 24/7, but the security guard may be inside the Schloss for a short time. In this case, please wait a few minutes and/or give a signal. The security guard’s office is just to the right of the entrance.

  • Information about the apartment

    • A room safe is available for storing valuable items such as jewelry or larger amounts of money.
    • The apartment key must never be inserted in the apartment door from the inside, as it will not be possible to open the door from the outside with a second key. If it becomes necessary to have the door opened by an external locksmith, the costs to be borne by the guest will amount to approx. EUR 120.00. If you have problems regarding your keys outside the opening hours of the Welcome Center, please contact the Reception Desk at 1110.
    • The heating is equipped with thermostatic valves. Select levels 1 to 4 as required, but not level 5. At level 5, the heating continuously runs at the highest level. If you are not in the apartment, please set the heating to the asterisk (frost protection) to save energy.
    • You should not dry your washed laundry in the apartment. Please use the dryers in the laundry room or hang your laundry on the drying racks in the room opposite the laundry room.
    • In L 2, 2–4, there is a playroom and lounge on the 4th floor. Parents are liable for their children. Please always leave the room tidy. Toys and books may be taken to the apartment.
    • Payments within the university can only be made using your ecUM smart card or Mensacard. The cards work like prepaid cards, i.e. you can load money onto them – either by paying cash at a top-up machine or by transferring money from a SEPA-compatible bank account.
    • For parcel shipping and package delivery, please state your name, apartment number, and address.

Please note: The Guesthouse accepts no liability for lost valuables.

  • The Guesthouse

    • In the display case on the ground floor, you will find the cleaning and laundry schedules (for further information, please see the section on cleaning and laundry) as well as important emergency telephone numbers.
    • In the basement of the Guesthouse in L 2, there are three washing machines and three dryers. The devices are operated via a terminal using your ecUM smart card or Mensacard. Please note that you need to buy your own detergent. A wash cycle costs EUR 2.50, a dry cycle EUR 2.00.
    • The ecUM smart Card is issued to staff members of the university on request. For further instructions, please see the welcome folder. You can purchase the Mensacard in the canteen paying a rental fee.
    • The IBZ room in L 2 and the garden are open to everyone. Please note the following:
      • Please observe the quiet hours between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m.
      • If you would like to use the kitchen for a special occasion, please let us know in advance. After you have received our approval, you may use the kitchen for your event. We ask you to clean it after the event, wash the used dishes, and sort them back into the cupboards.
      • The oven and other electrical appliances must also be cleaned after use.
      • The IBZ has a very good WLAN connection. For larger events, the IBZ and, if necessary, media technology can be booked with the Guesthouse Administration.
  • Cleaning and laundry

    • You are responsible for keeping your apartment clean.
    • Every two weeks, an external company cleans the sanitary area. It is therefore important that all surfaces are clear (no laundry, garbage bags, leftover food, etc.).
    • The water in Mannheim is very hard and leaves a white film on tiles and taps as well as in the pipes. Nevertheless, it is normal drinking water.
    • The cleaning dates can be found on the monthly list in the display case (ground floor). The cleaning staff will always ring your doorbell first (we ask you to leave your apartment for approx. 30 minutes); if you are not at home, the cleaning staff will enter the apartment on their own.
    • We provide bed linen, two towels and two bath towels per person as well as cleaning cloths. Everything except the bed linen must be washed by yourself.
    • The laundry room is located in the basement of the Guesthouse in L 2, 2–4; guests staying in M 2 can also use these facilities to wash their laundry.
    • The bed linen is taken to the laundry every two weeks on Wednesdays. If you wish to make use of this service, please refer to the schedule in the display case.
    • Please leave the pillowcase, duvet cover, and fitted sheet outside your apartment by 10 a.m. From 10 a.m., the housekeeper collects the used bed linen and replaces it with fresh ones.
      • The housekeeper will always ring first. If you are not at home, they will enter the apartment on their own and place the fresh bed linen on the bed or table.
  • Waste separation

    • The garbage cans are located in the courtyard of L2 and in the waste room at the bottom of the stairs in M2.
    • Blue garbage can: Paper, cardboard (shredded)
    • Yellow garbage can: Plastic waste, synthetic material, metal. Please do not throw in sealed bags.
    • Black garbage can: Residual waste incl. organic waste
    • Glass must be disposed of in the public glass container opposite L 1, 1 (glass is separated by color: white, green and brown glass).

Please note: Old clothes, shoes, suitcases, and other items do not belong in the house waste bins. There are special containers for this purpose.
