Changing Your Stay
Even once you have settled in in Mannheim, the team of the Welcome Center will continue to be on hand with help and advice during your entire stay at the University of Mannheim. Your employment contract will be extended? You want to extend your residence permit? You are planning to move or marry or you are expecting a baby?
Change in address: notifying a change in address
If you plan to change residence within the city of Mannheim or within Germany, you have to inform various authorities about your new place of residence. First and foremost, within ten days, you should notify the residents' registration office of your new place of residence. You are planning to move? Please use the checklist provided:
- Notification of a change in address: Please proceed as described under registering residence. If necessary, the residents’ registration office will then automatically notify the foreigners’ office and the tax office of your new place of residence. It is not necessary to de-register your former place of residence.
- Notifying the fee collection center of public-law broadcasting institutions of a change in address: Please read our information on the public broadcasting fee (‘Rundfunkbeitrag’).
- Notifying the Human Resources division of a change in address: Please note that you have to sign a specific form. Unfortunately, it is not sufficient to simply inform the Human Resources division or the Welcome Center via e-mail. Please contact the Welcome Center. We will send you the appropriate form and help you to fill it in.
- Notifying VBL, your health care provider, or other contractors of a change in address: The Welcome Center would be pleased to provide you with pre-formulated standard templates.
Extension of the residence permit
As a rule, residence permits for non-EU citizens have only a limited period of validity. Usually, the limitation is calculated according to the purpose of the stay (e.g. being invited by the University of Mannheim as visiting scholar for a fixed period of time) and the funding available. If you plan to extend your stay, you have to apply for a corresponding extension of your residence permit. The Welcome Center will remind you of all terms that you have to comply with and assist you with the extension of your residence permit. Together with your host and, where necessary, the Human Resources division, we will get all required documents for you. We will make an appointment with the foreigners’ office and assist you with the application procedure there.
Extension of the employment contract
Non-EU citizens, in particular, must have their residence permit extended accordingly, before their employment contract can be extended. At the same time, the term of every employment contract is limited to the validity period of the residence permit. The team members of the Welcome Center of the University of Mannheim are experts when it comes to solve this typical chicken-and-egg situation in close coordination with the Human Resources division, the schools, and the foreigners’ office. Please contact us as early on as possible, i.e. about three months before the current employment contract expires. The team of the Welcome Center will provide individual advice, obtain any required documents of proof from the schools and the Human Resources division, and assist you with the application at the foreigners’ office.
German Bureaucracy is real, however, with the Welcome Center, it came as part of my smooth sailing into a life-changing experience in one of the best cities and universities in Europe. I cannot thank the team enough for their continuous support.
