All statutory health insurance schemes include the same treatments that are determined by the government. The amount of insurance payments depends on your individual income. Family members without income can be insured under the same policy without having to make additional payments. Employees are generally required to be member of a statutory health insurance, unless they surpass a specific amount of income.
If you are an international researcher who has entered an employment contract with a duration of more than three months with the University of Mannheim, you are liable to social security payments.
A detailed description of all insurances that are part of social security can be found on the EURAXESS Germany website in the social security section.
However: If you are employed by the University of Mannheim for less than three months and you have not been or will not be employed in Germany during the course of the respective calendar year, you may be exempt from the obligation to take out statutory health insurance. That means that you do not need to submit proof of statutory health insurance to the University of Mannheim as your employer. You do, however, have to make sure that you have sufficient health insurance coverage for the duration of your stay. The Welcome Center will specifically advise you on these matters.
Important notice: Please be aware that your insurance coverage does not take effect until the first day of employment. You also have to be insured for the period between entry and the start of your employment. We recommend purchasing private travel insurance while still in your home country.
Before signing your employment contract with the University of Mannheim on your first day of employment, you will have to have taken out statutory health insurance.
The Welcome Center will support you in covering health insurance. The university will notify your health insurance provider of your employment. The health insurance provider will then inform the other social security carriers. Following this process, the statutory pension insurance carrier will provide you with a social security number. Social security payments are made directly by the employer who will deduct them from your salary.
That is why you should take out statutory health insurance first.
All health insurance providers in Germany can be found on the website of the National Association of Statutory Health Insurance Funds.
