Joao was born in 1990 and grew up in Porto Alegre, Brazil. He holds a bachelor's degree in Economics from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS) and a master's degree in Economics from Getulio Vargas Foundation (FGV-EPGE). His research interests have been in public economics and macroeconomics, especially income taxation, sovereign debt, and essential models of money.
