Tunjay was born in 1999 in Baku, Azerbaijan. He earned a bachelor’s degree in Computer Technology and Information Systems from Bilkent University, where he first combined programming skills with an interest in economic questions. He then completed a master’s degree in Economics at Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich, working as a research assistant at both LMU and the ifo Institute on projects in labour economics, immigration, and the political economy of voting and conflict. In his master’s thesis he studied whether U.S. voters reward incumbent‑party candidates in House elections for pre‑election increases in federal spending, and how different factions within the Republican Party shape these responses. Before joining the CDSE, Tunjay spent a year as a predoctoral researcher at the Uppsala Immigration Lab and Urban Lab, studying labour‑market outcomes, education, and immigration. His research interests centre on labour economics and political economy. In his free time, he enjoys following current affairs, playing and watching tennis, and taking long walks.
