Preparatory language courses

The International Summer or Winter Academy (ISA/IWA) at the University of Mannheim is much more than just a language course: in addition to joining the intensive language course that takes place in the morning, you will have the opportunity to get to know the German language and culture and to deepen your knowledge in various hands-on courses.

For example, you can attend a variety of seminars and make first contacts at events on German food culture or pop music.

  • Duration and courses

    The International Summer Academy will take place from 4 – 29 August 2025 in Mannheim.

    Welcome: Monday, 4 August 2025
    Start of lessons: Tuesday, 5 August 2025

    Registration deadline: 15 July 2025

    In the morning: The program comprises German language lessons at elementary, intermediate or advanced level. A language placement test will be held online.
    In the afternoon: Workshops and seminars

    Fee: EUR 685.00

    ECTS credits: 6 ECTS credits

    Participants of the International Summer and Winter Academies may also use all of the university’s facilities: For example, they can use the Media Center for individual learning or take part in sports courses offered by the Institute of Sports.

  • ECTS credits / certificate

    For successful participation in the International Winter/Summer Academy (IWA/ISA), you will receive a certificate worth 6 ECTS points at the end of the course.

    Please note: The International Summer and Winter Academies will not be shown in the Transcript of Records of the University of Mannheim. You will receive a certificate from the Service and Marketing GmbH that organizes the IWA/ISA. Please check in advance with your home institution whether

    • ECTS will be recognized on the basis of the certificate.
    • your home institution will accept the certificate when it is handed in by a student.

    If your home institution does not accept the certificate when it is handed in by a student, please ensure n good time before the end of your semester abroad that the certificate will be sent digitally to your home institution.

  • Registration / payment / cancellation

    International exchange students can register via the registration form after they have registered in the course portal of Service- und Marketing GmbH. You will be asked to indicate the application ID of the International Office, which you will receive with your letter of admission as soon as the partner university has nominated you and you have completed your application.

    Please note that payment of the course fee must be made via the course portal within 6 hours of registration. After successful registration and payment you will receive a booking confirmation and further information by e-mail.

    Please note the terms of cancellation and termination of Service- und Marketing GmbH:
    Participants may withdraw from the contract in writing up to two weeks prior to the start of the course. In the event of a cancellation, the Universität Mannheim Service- und Marketing GmbH is entitled to appropriate compensation in the amount of Eur 300. If participants withdraw from the course, reimbursement of the course fee will be made on a pro rata basis. If the participant cancels the contract within two weeks prior to the start of the course, 80% of the course fee will be due. There will be no refund after the course has started.   • Accommodation

    Please note that the price for the Summer and Winter Academies does not include accommodation costs. Accommodation is the responsibility of the student. Please make sure that you arrange housing in time.

    Exchange students from our partner universities can apply for one of our rooms in the residence halls of the Studierendenwerk. As soon as you have completed your application for participation in an exchange program at the University of Mannheim, you will receive a link to the application form for the student residence hall of the Studierendenwerk.

    If you have booked a room in one of the student residence halls of the Studierendenwerk, you can stay there for the period of the academy. However, this is only possible if you have registered for participation in the academy on time. If you decide to take part in the academy after the registration deadline, we cannot guarantee that your room in the student residence will be available for you at the start of the academy.

  • Exchange students participating in the state-to-state program with Baden-Württemberg

    Exchange students who come to the University of Mannheim in the context of the state-to-state program with Baden-Württemberg are exempt from paying course fees. This is with the exception of the Baden-Württemberg/North Carolina Program. Students participating is this program are required to pay the course fee in full.

    Baden-Württemberg cultivates exchange programs with the Canadian province of Ontario and the US states of Connecticut, California, Massachusetts, North Carolina, and Oregon. Registration via the online form is also mandatory in these cases. Please enter the application ID of the International Office that you received with your letter of admission.

    You can find out whether you are participating in an exchange program with Baden-Württemberg and whether this applies to you in the e-mail you received with your letter of admission.
