Description:
This course is part of the ENGAGE.EU program “Global Sustainability Management”. Students form other programs welcome!
Cultures of Sustainability is an MA-level lecture course that explores the historical foundations, cultural dimensions, and intellectual trajectories of environmental thinking. Delivered in an online, asynchronous format, the course is designed for self-directed learning. Lectures will be available as videos through Ilias, accompanied by reading lists and primary sources.
The course examines the history of human–environment interactions, focusing on shifting approaches to environmental thought, the emergence of sustainability as a concept, and the evolution of environmental movements and policy frameworks. Interrogating common assumptions and diverse conceptualizations of sustainability, students are guided to critically examine Eurocentric frameworks, explore the impact of ideas such as romanticism on modern environmental sensibilities, and engage with indigenous perspectives and practices of sustainability. Part of the lecture course will turn to environmental history through the lens of ecosystems, exploring how sustainability has been framed in the context of different environments and populations.
You will receive access to the MOOC after registration.
