New Project to Improve the Supply Chain Act

The Supply Chain Act (Lieferkettensorgfaltspflichtengesetz (LKSG)) is a German law to regulate the responsibility of companies to respect human rights along the supply chain. Now that a supply chain act at the European level has been adopted, the existing German Supply Chain Act must be adapted. This offers the opportunity to check the German Supply Chain Act for weaknesses and improve it if necessary. The University of Mannheim provides almost 30,000 euros in funding for a research project that uses the example of German shrimp imports from Bangladesh to analyze the effectiveness of the law and develop recommendations for actions.
The project will be carried out in the summer of 2024 and early 2025 by a team of three researchers from Switzerland and Bangladesh, led by Professor Dr. Bernward Gesang, Chair of Practical Philosophy and Business Ethics. The aim is to find out how the German Supply Chain Act can be further improved to better protect people and the environment at the beginning of the supply chain, which, like in the case of Bangladesh, are often located in countries of the Global South.
