International Shanghai Ranking: University of Mannheim Again Leading in Economics and Social Sciences

The University of Mannheim has been ranked the best German university in Finance and Business Administration. In Sociology, the University of Mannheim has improved and is now ranked number two in Germany.

The Global Ranking of Academic Subjects 2021, the subject ranking of the so-called Shanghai Ranking, has recently confirmed the University of Mannheim’s pole position in Germany in its area of specialization, Economics and Social Sciences.

In six of the fourteen subjects in the category Social Sciences, which includes Business Administration and Economics as well as Communication, the University of Mannheim is considered one of the top three universities in Germany. For Finance, the University of Mannheim ranks number 1 in Germany, in Business Administration it achieves a shared first place. In Political Sciences and Sociology, which improves by four places compared to the previous year, only one German university is ranked better. In the rankings for Economics and Communication, the university ranks third among German universities.

The Shanghai Ranking is an international ranking of higher education institutions that has been conducted by the Shanghai Jiao Tong University since 2003. Each year, over 4,000 higher education institutions worldwide are assessed on the basis of various indicators, such as the number of publications in renowned journals, the number of citations and the extent of international research collaborations. Consideration is also given to the academic influence of the higher education institutions. Since 2017, the Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS) has also been published, which this year examined and evaluated the performance of more than 1,800 universities in 54 subjects.
