Shanghai Ranking 2026: The University of Mannheim Achieves Excellent Results in the Economic and Social Sciences

The University of Mannheim has once again performed very well in the latest ‘Global Ranking of Academic Subjects’ (GRAS) by the Shanghai Ranking. In a total of nine subjects, the University of Mannheim ranks amongst the top ten universities in Germany.

The Shanghai Ranking is regarded worldwide as an important benchmark for the academic performance and scientific influence of universities. In this year’s ranking, the University of Mannheim is once again among the leading German universities in the social and economic sciences. In the ‘Social Sciences’ category, which also includes economics and communication studies, it ranks amongst the top three universities in Germany in four out of ten listed subjects.

Compared with the previous year, the University of Mannheim has improved its ranking to second place in management and third place in economics and sociology across Germany. It continues to hold third place in finance. The university ranks fourth in political science, communication studies and business administration, and shares sixth place in psychology. Globally, the University of Mannheim remains among the top 100 universities in political science and communication studies.

The Shanghai Ranking was launched in 2003 by Shanghai Jiao Tong University and annually assesses around 2,500 higher education institutions worldwide based on criteria such as the number of academic publications, citations and international research collaborations. Aspects relating to teaching and learning, however, are not taken into account. Since 2017, the Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS) has also provided detailed results for individual subject areas. In the latest edition, the performance of around 2,000 universities across 57 subjects was analysed.
