Hi, I am Paul and I started studying Sociology with a minor in Psychology at the University of Mannheim in the fall semester 2024/25. Sociology is a very interesting program to study, even though many people can’t quite picture what it is at first. So if you have any questions about studying Sociology or about living and studying in Mannheim, please feel free to reach out to me. Even if you’re already studying and have some questions, I’m happy to help!

Why I chose this program

I decided to study Sociology, because I want to better understand our societal structures. “Why do people and social groups act the way they do, even though it may not seem logical or in their best interest?” That is the question that led me to this field of study and continues to guide me.

Studying at the University of Mannheim

  • What’s special about the program?

I consciously chose to study Sociology at the University of Mannheim, because the program places a strong emphasis on education in methods and statistics. This does not only allow for theory and practice to be closely intertwined. It also has a positive impact on my career opportunities and makes it easier for me to pursue a career in research. In addition, there are multiple social research institutes in Mannheim, where you can gain first practical experience in the field of sociology by working as a student assistant or completing an internship. Students in Mannheim also have the opportunity of adding a minor to their Sociology program. Moreover, the university places great emphasis on gathering experiences while studying abroad, supporting students by providing excellent advice and offering a wide range of partner universities.

  • Extracurricular activities

Mannheim is the ideal place to study. The city can sometimes have a bit of an edgy vibe, but it's definitely an authentic place. Mannheim is just the right size, neither too big nor too small. On top of that, rent is a bit more affordable than in most other cities. If you like to go out, there are plenty of bars and clubs here, or you can head to the Schneckenhof on Thursday evenings, where open-air parties organized by students for students take place. You can also get involved in one of the many student organizations, the departmental student committee or one of the student groups. If you like being active, there's a wide range of sports activities to choose from. We have everything you could wish for, whether that's soccer, yoga, fencing, or a university gym. Life is never boring in Mannheim.

After graduation

  • Further study

The master’s program in Sociology prepares students for a doctorate and an academic career. That’s why most graduates of the master’s program go into research. At the same time, our graduates are in high demand as specialists and managers in various fields, working for companies, political parties, associations, international organizations, and in public administration. This includes the fields of consulting and strategy development, public relations, organizational development as well as human resources management and development. Other fields of employment are project and quality management, marketing, and communications.

Alternatively, you can study the master’s program in Social Data Sciences, which places even greater emphasis on methods and statistics and also prepares you for an academic career.

  • Career opportunities

Graduates of Sociology can start a career in various fields of work, for example in the public service sector, in international organizations and associations, or in human resource management. The Internship Office and the internship database support you in the search for internships and entry positions on the job market.

What you need to know

  • Application and admission

As there is no numerus clausus for Sociology, I can only recommend anyone interested in the bachelor’s program to just give it a try. If you have any questions, you can always contact the school or other students.
