Description:
Have you heard about the state of crisis we seem to be in lately? From the pandemic to political conflicts, financial challenges, social media, and climate change: crises have permeated important realms of our lives today. This course aims to illuminate different notions of “crisis” and analyse its causes and effects on culture, finance, literature, and politics. We will look beyond the buzzword, define the concept of the term, and develop an understanding of approaches by cultural theorists, writers, and experts in their respective fields.

Designed as a joint virtual project with Salem State University, students from Mannheim and Salem, Massachusetts will work together to address crisis and its ramifications on a weekly basis. Furthermore, the course will be expanded by six guest instructors from Literature, Linguistics, Economics, and History to facilitate a thorough analysis of the many different facets of crisis. In our international and interdisciplinary classroom, students are encouraged to take new perspectives on their subject and discuss crisis as a global phenomenon in an intercultural setting.

The Dynamics of European Integration

Research on European integration distinguishes between the causes and consequences of the institutional choices for European integration. In the current debate, proponents of liberal intergovernmentalism argue that the political leaders of the member states are able to design an effective institutional framework for EU policy-making, while postfunctionalists contend that an institutional mismatch exists between supranational form and function. This lecture introduces into the theories and methodologies about the causes and consequences of the institutional choices and their implications for EU policy-making. To understand research on the dynamics of European integration, students should have advanced knowledge in analytical theory and methodology. They should meet three conditions:
  • Firstly, knowledge of the basic literature in international relations and comparative politics (lectures in BA);
  • Secondly, methodological knowledge of research design and statistics (respective courses in political science or other disciplines);
  • Thirdly, high interest in cutting-edge political science research (published in international leading scholarly journals).
As an accompanying reading to the readings published in the syllabus, I recommend reading the book by Simon Hix and Bjorn Hoyland. 2011. The Political System of the European Union, Basingstoke: Palgrave. Furthermore, basic information can be found at https://europa.eu/european-union/abouteu_en. The lecture is interactive, which means that participants can ask questions. To foster interactive communication, the slides of the lecture will be made available before the session.
Aims:
  • Ability to understand and select political science studies on European integration and the European Union;
  • Excellent knowledge of the state of research on the main approaches to European integration and the European Union;
  • Scientific understanding of the functioning of the integration steps and the political system of the European Union;
  • Theoretical and methodological knowledge for the study of European integration and the European Union;
  • Applying skills and knowledge to related or future problems of European integration and the European Union.
Attendance: Preparation of the listed articles for active participation in the discussions of the Zoom-sessions.
Late Work Policy: Students need to start early with the preparation of the articles, so that they are able to discuss the content. However, should you find yourself in a situation which hinders you from preparing articles, let me know as soon as you can and not on the day the task is due or afterwards. We will work together to come up with a solution.
Technology Policy: As you surely know, cell phones and computers tend to obstruct attention when used inappropriately. I suggest responsibly using technology during the Zoom sessions. Hence, your laptop/tablet should only be used for note-taking and retrieving and reviewing articles where necessary.
Students with Disabilities or Chronic Illnesses: Contact me, if you need any special support. Please do so early in order to ensure that the appropriate arrangements can be made early on.

Next to a discussion of how to define and measure ‘autocracies’, we will focus on the questions of how autocratic leaders deal with the dual problem of power-sharing among autocratic elites and controlling the mass public. We will also spend time on the role of institutions and public support in autocracies, how censorship and propaganda work and the prospects of protest mobilization. Next to substantive discussion the lecture will put great emphasis on the practice of quantitative political research.

Description:
Statistical skills are essential for students of any empirically oriented social science. In the study of political science an understanding of statistical data analysis is necessary not only for conducting analysis, but also for understanding a significant proportion of the empirical political science literature. This course is an introduction to data analysis in empirical political research. We will introduce the basic methods of data analysis using the statistical software package Stata. The course aims to provide students with an appreciation of what good statistical analysis can achieve, how to use statistical methods appropriately and with confidence and how to interpret the results produced by those methods clearly and correctly.

Description of the course

The sociology of migration is undoubtedly one of the sociological areas that have experienced a noticeable upswing in recent years. In the course “Ethnic inequality: Comparative approach” we cover a broad array of topics in migration sociology. We first carry out the sociological examination of the causes of migration and address the question what immigrant selectivity means for their successful integration into host countries. The second part of the course deals with the consequences of migration for immigrants themselves and for their incorporation in new societies. We particularly explore cultural, structural, social and identificational aspects of immigrants’ integration.  In the third part of the course we look into the reactions of the native-born majority population towards newcomers and the general consequences of immigration for the host society. The breadth of the topics covered by the course reflects the heterogeneity of the field, both theoretically, methodologically and empirically. The overarching aim of the lecture is to provide expertise in the field of migration sociology, paying attention not only to the description of main developments but also to the theoretical understanding and critical assessment of the sophisticated empirical evidence.

Course suitable for:
Bachelor, Master
Language of instruction:
English
Credit hours 1:
2
Attendance:
Online, live
Description:
Climate change represents a major threat that needs to be tackled on the national, regional, and international levels. The reduction of greenhouse gas emissions is one of the main instruments of climate actions that require global efforts and cooperation between countries. This entails the adoption of policy measures, legal acts, and external relations guided by international agreements.
During this course, we will analyze the EU legal framework on the climate change issues and the interrelated energy policy matters. In the following part of the course, we will deal with the environmental protection actions on the international level, with special attention to the United Nations climate regime. Furthermore, the influence of the environmental requirements on international trade will be also explored, with a focus on the World Trade Organization rules.
Next to the results of the final written (online) exam, the results from seminar papers will also contribute to the overall grade for this course.

Course suitable for:
Bachelor, Master
Language of instruction:

International Humanitarian Law (IHL) is a body of rules that seeks to limit the effects of armed conflict. IHL forms part of public international law and is largely based on treaties and rules of customary international law.
In this course the development as well as the basic concepts of IHL will be explored. Students will be introduced to the most important documents governing armed conflict, learn how to apply these and will consider the challenges posed to the application of IHL in armed conflicts. A large part of the course will focus on the new developments in IHL including the emergence of new forms of armed conflicts and the development and use of new technologies in armed conflict.
