Information for researchers who are in danger or have fled Ukraine about Funding programmes and scholarships

Please find below a brief overview of current funding opportunities for doctoral students and researchers who are in danger or have fled Ukraine. If you are in contact with refugee researchers and are looking for support, please do not hesitate to contact Department I – Research Funding.

Walter Benjamin Programme

Refugee researchers can apply for their own project to be carried out in Germany through the Walter Benjamin Programme (Walter Benjamin-Stelle). The restriction of the target group to the early postdoc phase, which otherwise exists in this programme, does not apply to refugees. Applications can be submitted at any time. The funding period is two years for a position is funded.

Volkswagen Foundation – Visiting Research Programme for Ukrainian Refugees

Applications for a funding period of 6–12 months can be submitted as of now. The target groups are doctoral students, postdocs and established researchers. Funding is provided in the form of a scholarship (1,500 EUR for doctoral students or 2,100 EUR for postdocs) and, if applicable, a monthly family allowance of up to 500 EUR. Applications are submitted in cooperation with a host researcher.

Alexander von Humboldt Foundation – Philipp Schwartz Initiative

For up to 36 months (24+12), a position for doctoral researchers can be applied for in cooperation with a host researcher. The deadline is 18 March 2022 for applications for Ukrainian researchers.

Baden-Württemberg Fund for Persecuted Scholars

Scholarships for researchers with a doctorate for a 12-month stay at a Baden-Württemberg university can be applied for through the IIE Scholar Rescue Fund at any time.
