New Benches for Campus Life
Since late 2024, eleven brand-new benches have been adorning Schneckenhof, the iconic courtyard of the University of Mannheim—thanks to the support of ABSOLVENTUM and VR Bank Rhein-Neckar eG.

Whether it’s student parties, fairs, or a casual lunch break with friends, Schneckenhof is always buzzing with activity. Over time, this heavy use took a toll on the courtyard’s seating, prompting the University of Mannheim Foundation to launch a renovation project.
“We wanted to take on a project that would directly benefit students—so the idea emerged to replace the aging benches,” explains Sabrina Scherbarth, the foundation’s managing director. “The wooden slats are made exclusively from certified, locally sourced oak from sustainable forestry. We really wanted to use regional materials—not just to make the benches more durable, but also to do our part for the environment.”
The project was made possible with funding from the Mannheim alumni network ABSOLVENTUM e. V. and VR Bank Rhein-Neckar eG. “Both have been valued supporters of the foundation for years,” says Scherbarth.
