A Network for Queer Colleagues

Coffee, cake, conversation: for over a year, queer members of the university community have been meeting every six weeks for the Queer Coffee Break — a safe space without an agenda. What began as a casual, drop-in get-together has grown into a network spanning the entire university.

“The name says it all,” says Janina Walker-Emig, a program manager in the Department of Law. “A coffee break sounds informal — and that’s exactly what it is. It’s a place where queer colleagues can simply come together in a relaxed setting.”

Together with Marcel Hörner from Information Security, Walker-Emig organizes the initiative, which quickly became a regular meet-up for queer employees. What started in March 2023 as a small, informal gathering has grown into something more: an LGBTQIA+ network that goes beyond coffee and cake to give shared concerns a collective voice and increase visibility. “This allows us to act more strategically,” says Hörner, who launched the Queer Coffee Break. “We’re bringing queer colleagues together from across the university, connecting teams, and helping create a workplace where people can be open about who they are.”

CSD participation and mentorships

“The coffee breaks will of course continue as part of the network,” Hörner confirms. The group also receives support directly from the President’s Office. “The University of Mannheim stands behind its queer employees. Diversity is a lived reality for us — and this network is an important building block,” says University President Thomas Fetzer.

Looking ahead, the organizers are considering additional activities, such as taking part in Mannheim’s Christopher Street Day celebration and launching a mentorship program for new queer employees. The network already works closely with the Department of Equal Opportunity and Diversity. “That’s crucial, because the network thrives on the ideas and engagement of its members,” Walker-Emig adds. “It’s an invitation to everyone: get involved and be part of it — by proposing new activities, organizing events, or simply sharing your perspective.”
