Hi, I’m Aylin and I’m currently in my first semester of the Master of Education program with the subjects German and Political Science. While I analyze and discuss important real-life topics in my Political Science courses, my German Studies courses allow me to deepen and expand my passion for literature in a variety of different lectures and seminars held by enthusiastic teachers. In addition, the university offers amazing opportunities to study abroad, which I will definitely take advantage of during the master’s program.

Why study the master’s program in Teacher Education?

The master’s program in Teacher Education is the last step any future teacher must complete at university. While the overall number of seminars and lectures in the two main subjects chosen is lower than in the bachelor's program, the master's program includes more courses in Educational Sciences. To make the educational theories and tools more tangible, the mandatory placement semester takes place every fall semester. Over the course of twelve weeks, you will see how schools work behind the scenes and learn about what it is like to be a teacher. At the end of your studies, you will write a master's thesis in one of your main subjects or in the field of Education Sciences.

The university is very well organized and comfortably personal at the same time. Especially the small seminar groups, the close interaction with teachers, and the overall high level of support makes the university stand out from others. Another key feature is the high level of student involvement. Students have many opportunities to get involved, help shape their everyday student lives, and advocate for their interests.

Last but not least, campus life also plays a major role: The atmosphere is open and energetic, making it easy to find new friends and build a network. All in all, Mannheim is an excellent choice for continuing your academic journey after completing your bachelor’s degree.

Studying at the University of Mannheim

  • What’s special about the program?

In comparison with the bachelor’s program, the Master of Education program at the University of Mannheim focuses much more on Education Sciences and Teaching Methodology. This means that you will examine questions related to teaching, learning, and school in greater detail and learn to put theoretical concepts into practice. At the same time, you will continue to expand your knowledge in the two chosen teaching subjects.

A key element of the program is the integrated placement semester, which usually takes place during the third semester and lasts for about twelve weeks. During the placement semester, you will be assigned to a school, where you will not only observe classes but also plan and teach your own classes, gaining lots of valuable practical experience. Your placement will be accompanied by university courses that will help you reflect on your experiences and connect them with theoretical knowledge.

The program also offers many opportunities to choose your own specializations and to develop yourself further. The small seminar groups often allow for personal communication between teachers and students, which makes learning more enjoyable and focused.

  • Extracurricular activities

The rooms and libraries are very modern and well equipped. Outside the lecture halls and seminar rooms, the university makes a great impression with its beautiful campus and the baroque palace, which is located in the city center.

In addition to the degree program, there are other reasons to study at the University of Mannheim: The members of the departmental student committee organize many interesting events such as the orientation week for first-year students, movie nights, poetry slams, and a city trip. The departmental student committee also promotes the interests of all students at the University of Mannheim. You can find useful information for first-year students on their website. In addition to the departmental student committee, you can volunteer in numerous other student organizations of all kinds that organize events and specialist lectures.

Sports enthusiasts are also in good hands at the University of Mannheim: The Institute of Sports offers an extensive sports program. Most of the courses are free of charge and you can try out almost any sport imaginable. There is also a gym nearby that you can use for a small fee.

Of course, you won't miss out on the nightlife either: In addition to the clubs, bars, and pubs in the city center and Jungbusch, the Schneckenhof parties, which take place on campus every Thursday and are organized by the individual departmental student committees, are particularly popular.

  • After graduation

Once you have successfully completed the master's program, the next step is usually the preparatory service (Referendariat). The preparatory service usually lasts about 18 months and takes place at schools and at seminars for training and in-service training of teachers. During this phase, you will gain extensive practical experience in teaching independently under close supervision. Successful completion of the preparatory service is a prerequisite for working as a fully qualified teacher later.

A special advantage of the Master of Education program is that graduates are not only qualified to work as teachers but also earn two comprehensive master’s degrees in their respective teaching subjects. This means that you can also work in fields related to your subjects rather than as a teacher.

What you need to know

How challenging is the master's program in Teacher Education?
The master’s program is definitely demanding, especially because of the practice-oriented semester and the academic requirements that still need to be met at the same time. However, if you are well organized, the program is quite manageable.
