New Mobility on Three Wheels

Getting from A to B across campus is a simple walk for many — but for people with limited mobility, it can be a major obstacle. Launched in September 2025, a new service now gives University of Mannheim employees the option of borrowing two electric tricycles. The idea is to shorten distances on campus and strengthen inclusion.

A job interview in L13, an office in B6 — about 1,200 meters lie between them, past the palace, across Bismarckstraße, and through the city’s grid of blocks. It’s a long trek, and for Andreas Wick, who has a walking impairment, it is hardly manageable on foot. But today things are different: Wick wheels a tricycle out of the shed in B6, clips in his cane, starts the electric motor — and sets off. Minutes later he arrives. “With this vehicle, I’m suddenly mobile,” he says. “It makes my workday much more flexible.”

Wick is the University of Mannheim’s Representative for Employees with a Disability. Since 2003 he has advised staff on issues related to disability and severe disability, supported them with applications, and ensured that accessibility laws are observed on campus. From his own experience, he knows how cumbersome everyday working life can be with physical limitations. “I try to attend as many appointments in person as possible, which means moving around campus a lot — when my body allows it,” he says. The idea of using electric tricycles to make the distances between university buildings manageable grew out of exchanges with colleagues at other organizations. “I wanted to create a low-threshold option for employees who, like me, have limited mobility on campus.”

A low-threshold option

Since September 2025, two Van Raam Easy Rider tricycles have been available at the university — comfortable, recumbent three-wheelers with electric assist designed for people with balance issues or physical impairments. A low step-through and a low center of gravity provide a stable, secure ride; the ergonomic seat with backrest reduces strain on the back and joints. Full suspension, a reverse gear, turn signals, and a cane holder round out a thoughtfully engineered package.

Employees with a qualifying impairment can borrow the tricycles for official university business from the Office of the Representative for Employees with a Disability in B6, 30–32 (Room 022). Wick and his team provide advice and a brief introduction. “The way the bike handles in curves takes a little getting used to,” says the passionate motorcyclist. “But you get the hang of it—and I’m happy to help.”
