Short-term stays for PhD courses at ENGAGE.EU partner universities

The ERASMUS+ short term mobilities for doctoral students provide funding for stays of 5–30 days at an ENGAGE.EU partner university.

- On-campus block courses shared in the ENGAGE.EU PhD course catalogue
- Learning experiences that will expand your research and professional skills as a doctoral student and that are offered by one of our ENGAGE.EU partner universities.
- Funding is only possible for stays of min. 5 up to max. 30 days.
No funding through ERASMUS+ for
- Research stays, research visits, conferences. Find out more about funding for research stays and travel to international conferences via IDEUM and Women go abroad.
- Any tuition fees/
course fees that may be incurred, except for registration fees.
Financial Benefits
The regular daily rate for your stay is EUR 79. From the 15th day, this will be reduced to 56 euros per day. There may also be a small allowance for (green) travel.
In addition, participants with fewer opportunities can receive an additional one-off payment of 100–150 Euros as well as support for travel expenses.
This applies to participants with…
- a degree of disability (GdB) of 20 or higher or
- a proven disability that leads to additional financial needs
- a chronic illness that leads to additional financial needs
- participants who travel with their child/
children
and
- working students under certain conditions
- students from a non-academic family background
When applying for ERASMUS+ funding, you will be asked if any of these critera apply. Your funding will be calculated accordingly.
Expect the Erasmus + grant to co-finance your mobility abroad. It will not cover all expenses.

When to apply
Step 1: Before your application
- Explore the ENGAGE.EU PhD Course Catalogue for courses, trainings, and classes. If the in-person course is open for doctoral students of ENGAGE.EU, 5–30 days long and at an ENGAGE.EU university, you can apply for funding with ERASMUS+ Short Term Mobility.
- Check with your supervisor if they advise you to take the course and will recognise the competencies acquired during your stay. If you are pursuing your doctoral degree at the School of Business or the School of Business Informatics and Mathematics, you will need their approval in writing (Email is sufficient).
- Possibly, at the end of your stay, additional steps will be required to approve the ETCS, depending on your department and according to the regulations of your doctoral program. If your doctoral degree guidelines do not require ECTS or you have already achieved the required amount, or if, for any other reasons, a full approval of ECTS is not possible, your course participation will be considered as voluntary achievement.
- If you are enrolled at GESS, check with your Center Manager if the coursework (ECTS) will be approved.
Step 2: Register and fill out the online application
- Register for the ENGAGE.EU PhD Course course/
training. Please not that there are specific regulations and deadlines for indivdual courses. Save the confirmation of registration. - At least 8 weeks before the planned stay, please submit your application using our online form.
Please enclose the confirmation of course registration from the ENGAGE.EU partner university and confirm that you have informed your supervisor about your planned stay and that they approve of it. If your pursuing your doctoral degree at the Business School or at the School of Business Informatics and Mathematics, please secure your supervisor's approval in writing (email is sufficient).

Step 3: Apply for funding with ERASMUS+
- If your application has been successful, you will receive an email with a link to the ERASMUS online platform where you can fill out the application for ERASMUS+ funding. The International Office will inform you about the next steps, e.g. how to set up the digital learning egreement.
- If you are employed as a doctoral researcher at the University of Mannheim (at the time of the planned stay), please apply for approval of business travel (online platform). You will receive the cost center from the International Office. Your superior must forward your application to Gela Wittenberg (International Office) for approval.
- If you are not employed as a doctoral researcher (but as a student assistant) at the University of Mannheim, you do not need to apply for approval of business travel.
