Program Ambassador for the Master’s Program in Economics

I’m Paula and I have been enrolled in the University of Mannheim’s master’s program in Economics since the fall semester 2023/
Why I chose this program
After my bachelor's program in Economics, I wanted to focus on empirical methods and a deeper understanding of current research in my master's program. As the University of Mannheim is one of the leading German universities in this field, I decided to pursue a master’s program in Economics at the University of Mannheim.
I was also impressed by the great freedom of choice within the master's program. Apart from the three mandatory courses in Microeconomics, Macroeconomics and Econometrics, there are no mandatory courses, which allows for a strong individual focus. I was also impressed by the opportunity to study at other departments at the University of Mannheim and the many options for a semester abroad.

What makes the program special?
The program offers a wide range of opportunities to specialize in different subject areas. Whether you are interested in a methodological and theoretical focus or applied courses, you will definitely find what you are looking for within the master's program! This applies to a wide range of subjects: from environmental and development economics to financial economics or advanced statistics courses. Students who are particularly interested in competition and regulation can opt for the competition and regulation economics track after the first semester and thus also take courses at the interface between Economics and Law. There is also the opportunity to apply for the research track and thus take further postgraduate courses during the master's program.
There is also a wide range of subject areas offered in the elective courses within the regular master’s program in Economics. Due to the small course sizes, personal contact with the teachers is possible.
Courses from other master's programs at the University of Mannheim can also be taken, for example from the Mannheim Master of Management (MMM) program or Sociology.
Extracurricular activities
In addition to your studies, you can get involved in a variety of student organizations: from political parties that represent our interests in higher education policy, to economic university groups that provide an insight into the professional world, to NGOs that campaign for human rights.
In addition, the departmental student committee for Economics deals with the concerns of students and organizes various events throughout the semester.
After graduation
Further study
The master's degree is the optimal preparation for a doctorate in Economics at leading German or international higher education institutions.

As an economist, you are in demand wherever economic relationships matter. Depending on your focus, you can work in ministries, international organizations, banks, insurance companies or politics. Consultancy and business journalism also offer exciting prospects. You can also pursue a career in science.
